Hey guys i have been doing some research on the mag catch and i guess instead of butchering an original magazine to fit my Auto Ordnance TM1 thompson i can modify the mag catch to accept original magazines instead of purchasing the 70 dollar mags from Auto Ordnance. I do not have the proper tools to shave any metal off of the mag catch or what ever it is i have to do. If there is a way to do this could someone please walk me through the process. Also i have heard that if i purchase a USGI FA Mag Catch it will fit perfectly but i am not sure about that. If anyone could please get back to me on what to do or what they have done that would be great, photos are a plus. I am just worried about ruining my mag catch by doing this wrong.
Also if anyone knows of a place selling the modified mag catch that would be awesome HOWEVER i did contact TOMMYGUNNER and they are OUT of the modified mag catch. Thanks everyone. |

I wasn't this smart I modified my mags with a drill press but basically all you need to do is....there is a round mag lock detent that hold the magazine in place it needs to be shortrned about 1/10 of an inch its just too tall for original mags. I bought a 5 pack of russian lend lease for $25 bqck in the daty and just modified the mags, it never occured to me to change the gun |

It's just easier to modify the magazines since all you have to do is use a 1/4" round chain saw file to file the mag catch hole upward until the mag will JUST lock in the gun.
If you modify the magazine catch and botch it, it'll cost you a lot more money. Plus, Thompson mags are not collectable, and you'll probably never be able to afford a real full-auto, so there's no reason not to mod the mags. If you insist on moding the mag catch, you use a flat file, preferably with a safe edge (edge with no cutting teeth) to carefully file the top of the actual catch part downward unti lthe mags will JUST lock in. While filing you have to keep the area in it's original shape, not slanted eother way, and properly rounded. Removal of the catch is tricky since you have to remove the entire trigger assembly to get the catch out and you can damage the catch or it's spring. If you can find an Ordnance Field Manual on the full-auto Thompson you can use it to disassemble the trigger group, since the basic disassembly is very similar. |
