I'm looking for a long range shooter (500 - 1000 yards), and I have some extra money to start a new AR build or an entry level Vanguard 2/ R700. Is a 20" barrel feasible for a 5.56 AR platform or should I bump to an "AR10" build? Or should I forget a new build and buy the bolt gun?

Bump to the AR10 or go bolt.

I'd go with a bolt gun. Probably a 300wm.

a decent bolt and great glass is the ticket I like rem 700 it is not more accurate than others but I like the safety.  the FN made Win mod 70s are crazy accurate and nice too.

I'd go with one of the Savage F/TR models.

Thanks, looks like it's a bolt gun then... 300wm was suggested, I also was interested in a 30-06. Any preference there? Also, R700 ADL a good buy? What about the Weatherby Vanguard 2? Maybe I should take this to the Precision Rifle Forum...

The ADL is a good buy if you plan on replacing the barrel. The stock barrel is too skinny and heats up too fast
