Well. Need some friendly input.
I really want a SCAR 16s after shooting one last year. The rifle fits great in the shoulder. Shoots great. Just all around nice rifle to say the least. Now, the price is a killer. Some folks have the cash to make that big purchase. I don't unless I sell a gun to fund the purchase. Now, I have been around firearms for quite a long time and AR's are where I am most knowledgeable. Sure it is easy to say get a AR, well have several and do like. I have also had the SIG556, MSAR STG556, hk93, Daewoo rifles of several flavors. And currently have a FS2000 along with several AR rifles. So those of u that had to sacrifice one or two guns for another was it worth going to a SCAR vs what you sold to get it. I won't sell the AR's I have, may sell my FS2000. Yes, also have to look at what I will be using it for. Might be my 'go too' gun if I get it. But is it worth it? Or get a higher end AR platform. I am waiting on a Tavor but that may be months down the road. Anyways, just wanting some good honest input. Thanks |

Thanks guys. Mainly looking at 556 platform. I have a M1A and STG58 to fill my 308 needs. Have plenty of HKG3 mags but just don't care for that type rifle.
I have had a hk91 in the past as well as SA SAR8 and several Cetme's. Thinking I might like the ARX100 when it comes out but would have to shoot one first. |
| I love my Scar 16 so much that i ordered and just picked up my Scar 17 yesterday. It's an expensive addiction. While I have several high end AR's (LMT MRP, Noveske SBR, KAC SR-15) I LOVE my Scars. They have advantages and disadvantages to the AR platform but they are definitely staying in my collection. |

The SCAR 17 is worth it, it is that much better than current "AR-10" or other .308 battle rifles on the market. The 16 while an improvement over the ar-15 is not considered by most to be worth the price difference.
If you want to get into .308 you will not find a better rifle! |

im not a fan of the SCAR. Its bulkier than an AR and cost too much. The only advantage i think is the gas piston system. However, most of us are not navy seals with unlimited ammo and sneak up on targets from under water.
My friend has a scar and he is limited on red dot optics because of that reciprocating charging handle. No go for Eotech so hes stuck buying an Aimpoint with riser. |
|
I love mine, have a couple. Still thinking about getting out of most of my ar15s, the carbines anyway. They really aren't much more than high end AR15s price-wise (KAC,Noveske, ect).
Unless you're in love with that F2000 I'd sell it and get a scar. I like my AUG for bullpups though so I'm biased. And if you want to use an Eotech (which is the red dot I use) either use an EXPS mounted towards the rear OR use a GG&G extended charging handle. $30. No big deal. |

I had a 16 for a whlie and I miss the hell out of it. I knew when I sold it that I would regret it. It is an awesome rifle. What killed it for me was the spare barrel situation. They've been promising them for years now and nothing has hit. And when they do eventually hit, its projected to be close to $1100. There's no way I can justify that kind of money for a spare barrel on an already expensive rifle. And what's the point of a QC barrel if you can't afford a spare barrel?
I sold mine and bought another MRP and an SR15. But damned if I don't miss it. It was always entertaining popping holes in the whole "you need to modify your mags!" mantra people blindly spouted. ETA: word is they are stopping production of the FS2k. I would probably hold off on selling it for a bit. |
| A team from my company conducted the field trials for the program which eventually selected the SCAR. They all agreed that the Robinson Arms XCR was the best rifle and the SCAR was a distant second. Politics won the day and the SCAR was selected. Then they dropped the feature that sparked the need for a replacement; quick caliber changes. I was eagerly anticipating the purchase of a SCAR until I saw the price tag. There are guns I would pay that much for but not an AR clone. |

Wait for the ARX-100, in Aug. & check it out before you decide. There's actually going to be a .300 Blackout cal. conversion for it, & photos of the ARX AK lower could likely mean that 7.62x39 could also find its way to market. None of the other "new-gen" rifles has cal-conversions. As much as I wish they would've made the grip removable (or at least left off the A2 finger notch), it still looks like a pretty nice rifle.
Also, a "G&A" article stated that a "heavy" (ARX-200) version might be in the offing at some point. |

With all these inputs I am going to hold off a bit before I purchase. I had a XCR that I sold for a friend, should have just bought it myself but something did not tickle my fancy. But I am revisiting it again as I really like the looks of the rifles that are being produced now.
But I think the ARX is starting to grow on me as well. Will depend on cost but would like to get to shoot both the XCR and ARX before deciding. But the SCAR is still on the table but as a lot of folks have stated the cost is a big factor. Thanks to all that have made input so far. Good to hear first hand info to help me make a decision like this. I don't have a problem spendin that kind of money on a gun, just want to make sure it is spent right. Semper Fi! |

I find myself drawn to the SCAR-17. It calls to me, but I don't own one ...
I guess I will have to make do with these 7.62 NATO rifles for the time being. Had just about the same setups prior to the SCAR17. Now they just sit in the rack looking nice and don't get shot any more. I haven't brought myself to sell them yet, but I can tell it's coming. The hoops we had to jump through to get solid optics or a pistol grip and all the other mods on M14s really fall short when you play with them side by side. |

None of course. But they may be coming, or maybe not. None were available for the M1A or M14 at first either, keep in mind. But regardless, barrel length and weight aren't goals- they are means to goals, unless you just want looks rather than a performance-delivering feature. If you want a lighter, handier rifle then a shorter barrel is one component of getting there, for example. But my "full size" SCAR-17 is handier and lighter than even my SOCOM, much less my Scout, Bush or Standard rifles. And it's accuracy is on par with everything except a few of the high end NM setups- and putting solid optics or bipods on them has never been anything but a nuisance. If the M1As remained better rifles, their resale value wouldn't have been hit as bad as it has been. Even during the recent insanity, I knew of more multiple M1As on the shelves at local stores that didn't move- and most are still there today. Walking gunshows and selling extra mags during the buying peak, M14 mags were the one style I consistently walked back out with without any buyers. I have no ill will towards the various M1A/M14 variants, and I own lots of them in the configs just like you showed. It is a classy, sexy rifle. But I've yet to find much of anything my SCAR-17 doesn't do better, and that's after almost 30 years experiences with the M1A/M14. |

TAP, I appreciate you sharing your 1st hand experience and opinions, but you don't have to sell me on the 17.
I liked it the first time I handled it and not having barrel options at this time is not a deal killer either. I'm trying to see where it would fit in with what I currently own and possibly which M14 in my collection it would replace best. |
|
I agree with you about the value of M1A's, but I noticed quite the opposite with LRB and SEI builds, Fulton not so much.

I'm totally with you there. Though they don't get out much any more, I've not replaced/sold any of mine. I have a NM EBR, so better range and accuracy is covered... that one stays. Question: Does the 17/H cycle subsonic ammunition? Engel Ballistic,180gr. Thumper. Never mind, it has a 1:12 ROT and that's not optimal for subsonic ammo. Also, the 16 oz. weight difference between the 17/S and my CQB-16 isn't enough to sway me. |

well, so far lots of good info. Guess I am just too much of a tight wad as I can't see spending even 2000 for a rifle that will be more of a range toy than anything.
With more looking and looking I am swaying towards a high end AR but they are pushing same price or close to as a SCAR. I have plenty of spare parts for the AR so that is looking better and better to me now. So will keep watching this post and prices and see what happens. Thanks |
