Just got a new bolt gun, hog hunter in .308.  Can someone give me a rundown on .308?  Looking for the basic "do-all" bullet weight to start out with. Not looking for super long-range, I will start messing with different weights when Iv done more research and get some equipment to start reloading the round. Just looking for the best round to start playing with/get a decent zero, despite the slim pickings lately

I was just out with my Savage 10FP and it doesn't shoot the 150 Fed Power Shok ammo nearly as well as Fed 175 GMM.  Of course that could just be the consistency of the load since PS doesn't equal GMM.  My gun is basically the same as yours but with 2" more barrel and a B&C Medalist stock instead of the Savage original.

Since you are reloading and have potential for some really nice accuracy, you should stick to 168 or 175.  I notice my 1:12 twist CZ550 does better with the 150 bullets than my 1:10 Savage.

Best "all around?"  165 gr. hands down. IMHO.

I like 150 softnose for light game

hogs are tougher though so either  168 grain FMJ or 160 FMJ but soft nose should still work very well since 5.56 dropps hogs very well within 80 meters

165gr. GameKing BTSP is my favorite traditional hunting bullet weight.  180 gr. Nosler Partitions are good too.  I might try 168gr. AMAX/ZMAX on hogs though just cause my  Rem. 700 AAC-SD shoots them so well.

I've had good luck with 165gr Hornady Interlocks, and 170gr Interlocks (round nose).  I got the 170's off a friend who reloaded for .30-30, and figured I'd see how they'd do in a .308.
