Took my son deer hunting for the first time this year.  I only had my remmy sps 700 tactical .308 for the both of us (the only "real" hunting bolt gun I own).  While sitting in the stand, we both spotted one about 110 yards out (lasered), but it was a classic, broadside shot.  I gave the rifle to the boy, who proceeded to center-punch the deer through the shoulder, a perfect shot, DRT.  Needless to say, the boy now wants to carry it from here forward while hunting.

As such, looks like I need to get another hunting rifle.  I'm leaning towards another Remington, and the .30-06 has always intrigued me.  I'm originally from Colorado, and will retire there, and will likely chase elk, mule deer, and perhaps pronghorns up in Wyoming.  My question is, what is the general consensus on the .06??? I know there is no one rifle which is perfect for every scenario, but for some reason like the .30-06, want something different (caliber wise) from the .308, and like the fact I can walk into any Wally World and find ammo.  Just looking for some input, suggestions, etc. that anyone would care to share.  Thanks as always!!

U answered your own question. '06 will serve you well with what you plan to do. IMHO No need to look further.

Ammo is everywhere.

U can't go wrong with the 30-06.
Every gun owner should have at least one.

I love 30-06. My major complaint is its loaded 200 fps slow for old guns and there are very few good heavy bullet loads.

A 180 is medium for caliber.

Agreed. I have a 70's vintage Savage 110 in .30-06 and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Shoot really heavy bullets. It's also 200+ fps faster.

Hand loading the 06 is where you really get to have fun with the cartridge!

Try pushing 220 grains with a 308!

30-06 is a great round used for plains game in Africa daily, it'll will drop anything in N amr.

It is the only round that I have had to use multiples on deer though.

The best 30-06 is the 54 Brazilian mauser nice guns if you can find one.

+1. I took my Remington 700 Classic to Africa to hunt plains game with and it served me well, from the little Steenbok through a nice Kudu.13 animals all told with 10 being 1 shot kills.  I used hand loaded 180 gr. Barnes TSX bullets that will go 1/2 MOA if I do my part. A really great book to read if you are a fan of the 30-06 is;  One Man, One Rifle, One Land by J.Y Jones. It will show the versatility of this great round.

I think the '06 is one of the most versital rounds there is.  It will kill any animal in NA and probably Africa.  I have a Rem 700 Mountan Rifle in .30-06.  It is a great walking around gun.  My dad just got one of the new Mt rifles with the Bell & Carlson stocks.  I like it even better than mine.  We shoot Barns 165gr TSX hand loads.  I took a white tail last year with one shot, and my dad got an Elk in Oct, with one shot.

For most applications, I'd agree.  But if the OP is chasing Elk, '06 is a better choice.  It really shines when hauling heavy slugs.

If you don't reload might as well get a .308.

If you do reload, a 220 at 2600 is a hell of a thing.

In the words of Colonel Townsend Whelen, "The 30-06 is never a mistake".  As one of the other posters said it is very versitile; will shoot any weight bullet from 110gr through 220grain.

ETA: Dang, I was beat. Anyhow, the .30-06 has been historically known as the "king" of American cartridges for good reason.

The .30-06 has been the most popular "do-all" hunting round for decades and for good reason. .30-06, .270 Win, .308 Win and 7mm Rem Mag are the top contenders for all around cartridges, IMO the .270 is slightly better if you are hunting on the smaller side of the game spectrum and the .30-06 is better if you are going for bigger game.

Serious questions. In what applications would you need/want to shoot the heavier bullets the .308 couldn't shoot? In what applications would the 200 fps increase in velocity be needed/wanted?

Well, moose, BIG bears, and long range shooting. A heavier bullet at a similar or higher speed will carry farther, and buck the wind better, and hit harder downrange.
I can load a '06 from mild to wild. I can do a .308s job with less pressure, and I can do more than a .308 can do at equal pressures, and with a heavier projectile.

I'm loading 200g soft points for my 1948 FN Mauser. It slaps down deer like the hand of an angry God. My LR308 won't handle them. 160g is as good as it goes for it. Bolt guns - 30-06. Semis - .308.

Larger NA game and most African game. All long range shooting.

O.P., my family has fought three wars with the .30-06 and collectively taken all species of North American big game with it (except polar and grizzly bears). All were or are well pleased with its performance to date for both purposes.

If you handload, bullets weighing from 85 to 220 grains can be used successfully. If rolling your own is not your forte take look at Hornady lite Magnum ammo. It nips right at the heels of the .300 Win.Mag.

As a handloader the 06 has become my favorite cartridge.  It can be loaded with bullets from 110 to 250gr and can use a huge variety of powders.  With the proper load, it may not be able to do everything perfectly, but it can do everything good enough... while not beating the shit out of you with recoil nor burning up your barrel in a thousand rounds.

Yeh, we love the '06 we custom load it down to 125 gr for groundhogs and uo load to 180 gr for bigger stuff. I can honestly say that i have had great luck Remington core lok 150 and 165 grain factory loads.

The .06 is one of the most versatile cartridges out there. As has already been said by others here it works great with heavy pills.
I know a guy that is a master hand loader who made some rounds with a round ball and a small load of pistol powder.
The idea was if he was hunting deer and had an opportunity to take a squirrel he could reach into a pocket and by feel alone pull out a round with the .30 cal ball that was finger pressed into the case containing I believe it was W231 but do not recall the exact load, may have been somewhere around 3 grns but don't quote me on this as it was a long time ago.
Anyway, this round had the report of a .22RF and was dead on accurate to about 25 yards.
He had me shoot a couple while at the range one day. It was crazy. You could see the round going down range to the target through the scope!
Not the big bang of the typical 30.06 round.
Yes, I am a huge fan!

You can load almost any centerfire cartridge in such a manner. .22 rimfire level blast and recoil from your big centerfire!
I've killed lots of squirrels with my old-'06 and quiet reduced loads.
The usual data requires a small charge of a fast-burning pistol or shotgun propellant, and often a filler such as 1 grain of Kapok fluff or a few grains of Cream of Wheat dry cereal, (Seriously! It smells like burnt bread when you fire it.) to hold the powder charge close to the primer.

Data is kinda hard to find, though.

Slow-burning rifle powders must never be used for such reduced loads as detonation can occur under some circumstances, destroying guns and shooters.

I used to use cast lead 170ish grain bullets from an old mold my grandad gave me, over top of some blue dot and filler. The report was around that of a standard velocity .22 long rifle, and it was heck on rabbits or grouse I ran accross while deer hunting. I hated giving up small game because I had too big of a rifle for bigger game so I loaded a bunch of those up. They'll barely go through a 2x4 at 30 feet, but they'll kill a rabbit surer than a .22 and other than the hole they don't ruin much meat.

If I could have only one rifle, based on component availability in my particular area and other factors, it would be an '06

That being said I hunt more with my 8X57mm (which I can make out of '06 brass if I have to )

Using a fired .22LR case as a powder measure (again a fast burning powder) and a #0 Buckshot is a nice little reduced load. Not my invention found it using Google one day a while back.
