Hey All,

Not sure where to actually post this, so I figured I'd start here in my 'home forum'

I'm looking for hearing protection.  right now I use an old cup style on top of earplugs and it's quite comfortable to be in my own world without any outside influence

What I'm looking for, however is a pair of earmuffs with the following requirements:

  • NRR of 25 or better

  • Electronic with microphone to pick up  local conversations

  • Active Noise Reduction - like on the Bose headsets where it drowns out noise like lawnmower, airplane, etc.

  • External audio input for either a phone, ipod, 2way radio

  • Comfortable and quiet over shooting glasses

Anyone have anything they use and like?  Cost?  Anyone ever tried putting in an ANR conversion kit (like they sell to the aviation community)?

Thanks,
Texan

walmart has the peltor s6 electronic muffs for $59.

I use harbor freight cheap $14 electornic muffs with no problems.

Ended up with a pair of these:

Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff (on Amazon)

only 22 NRR, but can wear with foam earplugs to block most everything else... then turn the volume up to pick up conversations and/or music.

So far, so good... did a nice job the other day, but I was on my own, so didn't have much in the way of conversation to pick up.

I have a pair of these and I think for the money they are great. I wear them during winter shooting for hours while outside. Keeps the ears warm and very comfortable to wear.

What you're looking for is the Peltor Comtac II Headband Model Headset MT15H69FB09 MT15H69FB-09. They ain't cheap, though! I have a pair of Peltor Tactical 7 that I've had for years and they're still working just fine.I've replaced the ear cup foam and pads a couple of times but other than that, no problems. Great protection.

i have had 2 pairs of the Howard Leight Impacts for about a year now. The electronics in one of them no longer works at all and apparently its not uncommon for that to happen. something with the wiring and keeping it folded up. what really sucks about that is howard leight doesnt take stuff back for warranty work, you have to go through wherever you bought them from (which is fine if you buy from amazon but i bought them unopened from a guy i work with)
that being said, theyre very nice and it works well for the price (the one that actually works that is, the other i just use as normal earpro)

Walmart is out of these, but Amazon has them for $54 with free shipping.

+1

They fit under a standard MICH Kevlar helmet if you re arrange the helmets pads to suit.

The comms input jack is a nice feature too.

I just use Howard Leight Max Lite ear plugs which are NRR-30.  I have a few boxes of 500pr for ~$20/box IRRC ordered through supply at work.  I hate muffs.
