Finally getting around to building a backstop in my backyard. Looking for feedback on what I have done so far, and what I plan on doing...
Calibers used will be 9 mm, 45, 22 rimfire... As much as Id like to shoot my AR here, I just dont think thats a smart idea.. I first created a "wall" by sinking 2 pressure treated 2x4x8's to a depth of ~18", spaced 7 feet apart. In front these I have stacked pressure treated 2x4x8's stacked about 5 feet high..This is further reinforced by screwing wooden stakes in the front on either end, and also spaced out along the back. Behind this wall i have made a berm of sorts that is about 3 feet high, two feet deep out of some old playground sand and discarded potting soil I obtained from a friend. I have access to more of these materials and will keep adding to it, along with stacking up some old logs behind it. On the front of the wall, I will be adding a rubber horse mat, and will hang 3/4" plywood in front of the mat. The plywood will act as a target holder and can be replaced when it gets too shot up, the rubber mat will act as a barrier to absorb some of the energy of the bullet, and than hopefully by the time bullets pass through the 3/4" plywood and the rubber mat they will just become embedded in the pressure treated wood, which once shot up can be burned and the lead retrieved. So in summary I have this: A wall 7 feet wide, 5 feet high made out of pressure treated wood. The target area is close to the bottom, in the center. Behind this wall is the beginning of a dirt/sand berm. In front of the wall, over the pressure treated wood is a rubber mat, and in front of that is a 3/4" piece of plywood. Eventually I would also like to create "walls" out of railroad ties if I can find them, second choice would be tires (tires are a last resort, due to the fact that at some point in time i will need to dispose of them). Also, I am shooting downhill if that makes a difference, and neighbors arent really an issue...I hear people shooting all the time here, everything from shotgun to full auto, and everyone around me target shoots or hunts. So, thoughts? |
