well i was on another forum and someone mentioned .458 socom and the 45-70 ballistic similarity. just throwing this out there but is a 45-70 doable in an AR15 or AR10 platform?i am by no means a gunsmith i just like ARs. i would think the rim would cause some feeding problems and just the size of the rim might be a problem. just wondering???

Somebody does a 450 Marlin in an AR-10. Can't remember who.

Between the large bolt face and the rimmed cartridge, I doubt .45/70 would be a great choice in an AR platform.

Remember, the .458 SOCOM case head is the same size as a .223/5.56 case head, and the rounds will load single stack in an AR-15 mag.

ya but the socom is a really spendy round. i know accuracy systems sells a 450 marlin barrel for an ar10. uppers are only about 1400 bucks so not a bad deal for the fire power. just thought i would throw it out there and maybe get lucky. i definetly like the bigger boolits.

Hell yeah - Imagine a blackpowder AR!!!!!  The rimmed cases might be a challenge - but hell the Bren functioned with rimmed cases.

I would say the only options for similiar power in an AR15 configuration are going to be 50 Beuwulf, or 458 SOCOM. Not going to have the same power as 45-70 extra power load, but probably about the same as the standard loads. Looks like both are around 1800ft/s, and 2500-2900ft/lbs

Not correct, the 458 Socom case head is the same size as 308 Winchester.

True, unless you reload.
Of course you can get a RRA Socom upper for a lot less than $1400 (about 1/2 as much), and you don't require the more expensive AR10 lower to mount it on' leaving quite a bit of cash for ammo.
Reloading also will greatly reduce the cost of ammo.

Yes and no, the extra power 45/70 loads are only safe in Ruger #1's and custom bolt actions.
The Socom's max specs. will push the same bullet a little faster than standard factory 45/70 ammo but slower than the extra-power 45/70 loads offered by specialty ammo manufacturers.

thanks COOP4570, all the info is great. i don't reload so that is a big cost for me( ammo).i dont shoot alot so i just save brass and sell it or give it to a couple friends.they let me rock on their full auto weapons so it is a good trade. i own an ar10 so large frame 450 marlin isn't a big deal.the 458 has intrigued me for awhile, but so has a beowulf.too many wants i guess.
