[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Age vs. Gun Count (Page 1 of 2)

Hey guys, I’m 31 years of age and have 11 guns (rifles, pistols and a shotgun). I've been collecting for 7 years now...couldn't afford to before. I was just curious as to where I stand on gun collecting. I goal is to purchase a new gun or 2 per year...that’s if something catches my interest, will not buy just to buy. So if you can post your age (or years of collecting) and number of guns...maybe I’ll have some ammo (pun intended) when convincing my wife I need a new gun.

Age = OpSec

Gun Quantity = OpSec

With that in mind, I dont understand getting quantity of weapons, Id rather have quality and then the rest of the money for ammo, mags, spare parts and maybe a class or two. Im all about streamlining, so as I get older, my gun collection gets fine tuned.

I seen a pic on here not that long ago, someone had like 8 Rem 870 shotguns, they all had the exact same crap on them. Im like "Why?", I can see having 2 maybe even 3 of the same, but 6-8. I realize we all love guns, but thats just more to maintain and if you ever had to bug out in a SHTF event, now you have to drag them all around. Id rather have a few quality reliable firearms that I get to shoot all the time, not worry about which dozen go this time to the range.

+1 Couldn't have said it better myself, same train of thought here. As I get older I refine and improve what I have.  No need to have 100 weapons and 100 calibers to feed. Keep the quality weapons that will serve a specific situation and consolidate calibers. In today's world you really do have to think SHTF preparedness, What are you going to grab and go with and is it ammo, magazine and part compatible with commonly used weapon platforms (NATO). If you are on a budget get one good 12 ga shotgun, 1 good 9mm pistol (preferably Beretta M9 - 92FS) and one primary weapon, a high quality AR type platform. Then some spare parts, mags and ammo also the means to carry / transport them effectively.

This is my basic SOP, yours may vary.

Like others have said above I have actually thinned out my collection over the years emphasizing quality not quantity. Several high quality firearms of just a few calibers and lots of ammo.

That is not what I asked...if you don’t agree with what I asked and nor do you have an answer (age & gun count) then don’t respond. I can care less what everyone’s opinions are. I asked a simple question and expected a simple answer....should have known that I wouldn't get that here. How hard is it to say...31 yoa/ 11 guns...thats it!!!

They did answer your question.
I will go by years of collecting, not age-  these are just hypothetical numbers, I don't want to get too detailed online.
year one-2

year two-3

year six-12

year 10- 3
no need to get upset, its just not always a number that goes up.  I agree with the previous posters, I wouldn't change the few I have now, for the many I had before.   That said, I count myself as a shooter more than a collector, for what its worth.

Age: 22
Number of guns: 6, with number 7 being picked up next weekend when I get home from military. Or number 8 if you count my service weapon.

Guns, in order of purchase:
Sig Sauer Mosquito
Savage Mark 2
Sig Sauer P226 X-Five Allround
Ruger P90
(Service Weapon, SIG 550)
Norinco M4gery
FN FiveseveN
Beretta 8000 Cougar to be picked up

All of these guns were bought with a certain intention. e.g. .22 lr training pistol/rifle, SHTF-Pistol, bullseye-pistol and so on.

My opinion on the discussion about how many are enough to stick with is that it doesnt really matter, does it?
When I look at my "collection" I still have my go-to pieces, also enough ammo and mags for those. But why should that stop me from buying other guns just for the heck of it, fun, collector purpose or just because I can.

Cheers from Switzerland

Edited which rifle my service weapon is

Bear in mind I did not own all 57 at the same time, and I do not have 57 right now, 57 is just the total of all that I have owned.

I have no idea how many guns I have.  I can make a pretty close guess, and its probably close to my age, but I lost track.  For a while, when the economy was good I tried to buy one every couple of months and was about to buy a transferable machine gun when the economy went to shit and I lost my job.  That put the brakes on my gun buying.  I still buy one from time to time, but not nearly as often, and sadly, I still don't have any NFA items.

I had 41 by age 28.

Thinned that down to 17 by age 42, and not much else I want to add to the collection at this point other than a M16 variant.
Everything I have had has been quality, I just got over the having firearms "just because" aspect of my life.

Age - 29
Been collecting for 4 years
Currently own about a dozen, but I've sold a few due to being short on funds for other projects or bills.

Sometimes I go months without buying anything, other times I buy a gun with each paycheck. I have a couple of other expensive hobbies tho(car's & tattoo's) that also suck up alot of my fun money.

It's not about how many, it's about what you want in the end. What I wanted in the end was a go anywhere do anything battery. I did give it a lot of thought and decided what I wanted in a lot of different actions and styles and went from there. Some would say you can do all that with 5 or so but I could say I could build a shed with just a hammer and a hand saw but would prefer to do otherwise. With that, the smallest number I came up with is 35 or so without sidetracking. What I mean by sidetracking is picking up something to add just because and not part of my end goal, I have and again, just because. I still have 3 1/2 (the half being a short barrel upper) to go but I know which ones they are to be done with my initial plan. And with age comes other expenses like having kids, the monthly mortgage, college tuition for one of them for now, a couple more to go and the normal household bills puts a cramp in the fun fund and of course all of those have priority over my hobby.

I do have friends that have, shall we say, rather eclectic collections and in sheer numbers can dwarf mine. There's nothing wrong with that, personal choice and opportunities that have arisen for them but it's not the way I wanted to go. My basic plan was/is to have a lines of firearms with overlapping calibers, all identical by way of weight, grips, stocks etc. with a matching .22 for practice and to share as many as I could practicably, the same caliber in hand guns and rifles. The styles I wanted were/is lever actions, bolt actions (with and without scopes), pump actions (shotguns, along with SXS and O/U), semi auto rifles and hand guns, revolvers both newer types (like 686's and 629's) and cowboy style (as in Ruger Vaqueros).

Not to distract but there are some other considerations you may want to think about. The more exotic a caliber, chances are the harder and more costly it is to find ammunition or perhaps spare parts if you've traveled and find you've either used it up or got separated from it/them for some reason. For the most part, I wanted to stick to main stream calibers, ones that you can find in most mom and pop stores like 30-30, .308, .357/38 special and so on. I do have some oddballs but I also have a decent amount of ammunition for them and as the overlap, power wise (for lack of a better description) with others, it's not a big deal. Also, buying a firearm is only the initial investment. From there you need besides ammunition, cleaning gear, targets, range or club fees if your not rural, maybe a good spotting scope or bino's., the list goes on. Because of that I started reloading. I have all the dies, length gauges, trimmers, etc. for every caliber I own. As I don't have a need to load thousands of rounds at a time, I have a single stage press and try and work out loads that each one likes best. Sometimes you can hit on 5 or 6 different combinations that work well.

I use the .22's a lot more than the others for a number of reasons. The main one is of course a cost issue. Some of my calibers can cost as much as $6-$7 bucks a pop for the higher end factory ammunition and that's not worth it to me to punch holes in paper. Because of the matching weights and ergos, the only difference is the recoil. It's never been an issue for me to jump from .22's to larger calibers as I just fall back on memory anyway and forget about the added kick. I find it easy to do.

41, started when I was 19, currently have over 100.

My first year was 4...semi, revolver, pump shotgun, and an AR.  Over the years I've scaled up and scaled back.  During my kalifornia exile, for example, I sold off a lot of oddball pieces and hings I had in wildcats or just one caliber.  I see people talk about "simplifying" on here all the time...don't do it.  You will regret it later.  However, during that time I purchased a lot more high quality and accurate pieces due to their waiting periods, gun rationing and other faggotry they impose on their citizenry while they chisel them out of their hard earned money.

Moving back to America, I bought a semi auto for every year I spent in exile within the first month.

I'll go a while without buying anything, then I'll buy a bunch.I'm very happy with my collection as it stands, but there's a few pieces out there that I want.  I've got a good representation of Colt Revolvers from the blackpowder era to the 1970s, for example.  I'd like to focus on some of the rarer variants for a while: blackpowder frame SAA's, pre war engraved SAAs,  converted bp revolvers, Military marked revolvers, etc  1 or 2 a year of these types would be good enough!

I'm totally with dietryin in the gun collecting realm.  Number is by no means and accurate way to evaluate a persons gun collection.  I'm 43 w/about 13 guns.  It's been that way for a while.

Some of them are hand me downs, some are very special purpose, and there are the ones I want to know how to use very well.  I tend to spend my money on ammo rather than new guns.

Yep.  When I was younger I would buy guns "just because" or to fill some arbitrary/asinine "_________ guns/year" quota.  Well, years later I ended up with a shit ton of guns in all sorts of calibers etc. which was a pain in the ass to keep track of, and frankly a waste of money and resources.  I've streamlined quite a bit.  I now only own firearms in .45, 9mm, 7.62x51, 5.56, .30-06, 12 Ga., and .22.  The only guns I will buy impulsively anymore are nice Garands and .22 pistols.  Otherwise, I'm concentrating on mags, ammo, and accessories.

I own however many I need to fill my perceived needs/roles. I had the most in my 20's. The herd was thinned down due to redundancy and having to clean so many after shooting sessions.

I don't collect firearms for the sake of amassing a collection. A gun I don't shoot is a gun that gets sold.
