Got a great looking enfield from a buddy for deer season.  Great condition,  awsome bore.  Can anyone tell me anything about it?  It reads No4mk1 F(FTR)48  sn reads FB20929A.  I can only see three SN numbers on the mag, bolt handle, and reciver,  all 3 are the same.  Also,  what do these rifles like to eat.  Recomend me a round for whitetail?

My only Lee-Enfield experience is with my No1 MK3 Lithgow made in 1919. It has been sporterized, before I got it. The forearm is cut down with most of the top handguard gone. I haven't tried it on a deer yet but I'm sure it would work great. I reload for mine using Sierra Pro-Hunter .311 150gr SPs. I have taken deer with that bullet and it works great out of my Mosins. I can get about an inch group at 50 yards with the iron sights. It's a good rifle but the stock doesn't fit me at all. They aren't really my cup of tea, but most people seem to like them.

(FTR)48 = Factory Thorough Reconditioned 1948.

Shoot it with a variety of ammo and see what it likes best.

Number 4's are good rifles.

One of my Uncles had an old sporterized No.1 Mk.III that he and my Dad used for years.

150gr for deer and 175-180gr for elk.

Never failed to put meat on the table.

Just DO NOT go Bubba on it.

BTW  you can plink for cheap if you reload with AK47 bullets i.e. .311 diameter 123 gr

The SMLE has a reputation for stretching the brass.
SMLE actions are not "springy", contrary to popular misconception.

Variations in rim thickness and the war time allowable tolerances in head space dimensions are the real culprits.

Neck sizing will extend the service life of the brass, change the head spacing system from "on the rim" to "on the shoulder" and will aid in accuracy.

There is some variation in bore and groove diameter too.
If an SMLE does not shoot well with jacketed bullets, cast gas check bullets sized to groove diameter should do the trick.

I've had good luck with Remington 180 grain Corelokt.  150 grain should be fine if you can find it, 180 is all I came across.

I shoot the Privi stuff from Aim Surplus, shoots as well as I can with the iron sights.  Lots cheaper than the $33 per box Remington stuff too, plus a variety of bullet weights, and styles.........well 150, 174, and 180gr.
