Semi-Automatic shotguns cost nearly an arm and a leg? I can understand some of Benelli's lines, being competition bred and a large amount of carbon fibre, but I'm finding other manufacturer's product lines to be much less than satisfactory. I can't imagine that there's much machining to be done, so am I correct in assuming there's a huge ass mark-up on semi-auto shotguns? Most of these shotguns cost more than a decent AR, with miles less millwork... And you can't really even claim that it's because ARs are imported, because they're not.

So my question - Are there really any decent shotguns that cost $600 (new) or less? I'm really liking the SA20, but it's made in Turkey.

Why do people post half finished topics? Just so it will make people want to find out what its about, possibly then irritating them which probably won't then get you an answer. Or maybe its.  .  .  .  .  .  .

why do people reply to topics when they have no intent of contributing to the subject at hand, especially in technical forums?

I appreciate the link, but I'm looking for something that isn't foreign. It's also my understanding that they're not very reliable. Do you have one? How is it? I'm always wary of magazine fed firearms that use rimmed ammunition.

Would it be easier if I put the question in bold or gave you some hints?

They look like they are. Doesn't say though. Wouldnt hurt to send them an email. Of course with shipping and transfer fees it'll put you right at or a little over the $600 limit.

ETA: or if you want to go a bit cheaper the CZ 712  can be had for less than $450 or the 912 for a bit more. I have no experience with them though so i cant tell you if its junk or not.

I paid $650 for my Beretta AL391. Its $50 more than you mention, and its not US made, but its a Beretta and better than decent. In fact I'd say its quite possibly the best gas operated shotgun you can get, IMO.

It would have been easier if you'd put the subject of your question in the subject field. That way people don't have to randomly click on posts just to see what they were referring to. No biggie.

I paid $300 for my CZ 712 brand new in 2006. I like it and take it out when I go grouse hunting, however it does have an unusual problem. It's always cycled low brass shells just fine, but I think nearly every time I've fired a high brass shell it failed to cycle. It was cheap, and I don't typically use high brass shells anyway, so I never pursued the problem. It's been 100% reliable with low brass.

However if the OP has a problem with Turkish made guns, the CZ 712 may not be for him being that they're made for CZ by Huglu in Turkey.

I love the Beretta 391 (that's what I have) but it would be hard to find one for under $800 new these days. The absolute best deal in Semi-Auto shotguns IMO is the Beretta AL-390. Nothing fancy but a damn good reliable shotgun that can be used for just about anything you want. Last time I checked, they could still be bought brand new at Walmart for under $600

I bought a new Mossberg 930 waterfowl gun, had the barrel cut to 24" and threaded, added a +5 tube, and an extended bolt handle.  I get 9+1 in the gun and one more if I ghost load it.  The whole thing came in right about $600.  I've used it in two major 3-gun matches and several local matches so far.  I absolutely love that gun.

It takes some breaking in, and changing the gas settings up at times, but they run well, and are quite freaking awesome once you get it going.  It is not awesome during that break in period though.

Winchester Super-X 2 can be had for around $600 and they are sweet.  I had a 3 1/2" magnum that would cycle everything reliably right down to the cheapest lightest 2 3/4 target loads I could find.  I kick myself for selling it bt needed something else worse.

I do have one and it is my favorite shotgun by far, my only other SA SG is a Benelli M4. It runs great and I would have no problem putting my life on the line with it, then again it isn't a home brew. I sent it to a reputable gunsmith who did the full conversion and full function and reliability service. It is no longer a $600 shotgun obviously but I think getting the base model is a great start. No problems with magazines or drums either

Fuck i can't believe I'm responding to this but you do know you can put your curser on the subject line and a box that contains the 1st couple sentences of the body of the post will appear right?

Add another +1 for the Beretta 390. I paid $400 back when Walmart first started carrying them. That shotgun has cycled everything from target 2 3/4 loads to full house 3" mags and never failed. It does use plastic furniture but everything important is top quality.

Yeah, I have one of the fancier models; A390 Gold Mallard. They are really, really reliable. Mine is quite beaten-up, weathered and worn internally, as it was when first purchased. It has suffered three stoppages in thousands of light cartridges, but the springs must be well past recommended service life, plus it could have been ammunition related.

I know a lot of people talk bad about the Stoeger P2000 but I have had one for 6-7 years and it cycles everything from 7/8oz skeet loads to 3" turkey cannons.  It has never let me down, ever!

So what is going to be the intended use of this gun? H.D.? Waterfowl? Geese? Turkey? Deer? this will play a HUGE role in the gun you pick.

Also, I don't understand why you want a "domestic" gun, but in your original post say that Benelli's are worth the money.

If you want a high quality shotgun, you might want to check out the used racks. I paid 500 bucks for my Benelli, born in Feb. of '96, HK marked, with a 21" vent rib barrel. The gun was used, but definitely not abused, & was well taken care of. the thing runs great.

ETA: You might want to post something in the Shotgun section when you decide what the gun will be used for.

Mossberg 930.

The reason semi-shotguns are expensive is that they are hard to get working reliably with a large variety of ammunition.  Shotgun ammo only runs around 14,000 PSI max to begin with.  If  you look at a typical opperating range of 9000 to 15,000 PSI that is a huge range (percentage wise) compared to rifle ammo.
