I was planning on ordering a new Model 70 in .338 Win Mag for elk hunting, but found a used one in a local shop. The used rifle has the following features:

Walnut stock with cut checkering and rubber butt pad
Marked "Classic Sporter" and made in New Haven, CT
Serial number G351XXXX
Blued finish
Mauser type extractor

I think this gun is an early 1990's production gun, but can't find any online resources that will give the date of manufacture. Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you for sure, but judging from some of my serial numbers I think that gun was made in the early 2000s rather than the early 1990s.  The Model 70s I have purchased in the 2000s start with g2 or g3, while the 1990s guns start with g1.

Early 2000s IIRC, U.S. Repeating Arms started using Mauser style claw extractors (Controlled Round Feed) again with some sub-models of the 70.  Just can't remember the year offhand.

It's somewhere between 1999-2006

ETA - Actually they returned to the control round feed in 1992.

Different models have different feed systems. No idea why!

I've noticed the typical deer hunting calibers tend to be a push feed design, while the Stealth models are CRPF hybrids. Saw some .338 Federals I believe at a gunshow in PA last year with the true CRF/Mauser claw. Nice wood one, nice finish, and the bolts we're jeweed. About 1100.00 IIRC....
