I have been planning on building a new hunting type weapon for a long time. I bought the lower last year thinking I would do it then but things for me have been pretty bad for some time and I haven't had the money. I hate to sell a gun once I buy one but I have decided to sell one of my other hunting rifles to help fund some of this build. I am looking at barrels and am back to the same old question I had last year when I was ready to buy. What do I go with the 6.5 Grendel or the 6.8? last year you hardly ever saw either at the shows but now they are popping up all over the place and there is so much conflicting information on this or that one that it's hard to know what to believe.

I'm not into 1000 yd shots, just want a shooter I can use for ground hogs, coyotes, and maybe a deer with some target thrown in at times. I already have a .223 build and don't want another with the same caliber so that is not an option for me. Both the 6.5 and the 6.8 seem to have their draw backs but I am leaning towards the 6.8 and was wondering if anybody had either of these two setups that could help me decide. I don't like the idea of having to buy special mags but the 6.5 seems to have more bullet choices.

Also I was reading on one of the sites about barrel fluting and they didn't seem to think that is a good idea and even said that if it is done the rifle wont be as accurate, which I find hard to believe but that is what was said so it adds to my questions I have. At my age, this will probably be the last one I will build so I would like to get it right.

Does fluting do anything for the barrel other than offer less weight and look good? I was looking at a barrel at Tony's booth at the show last week and it was the most beautiful thing I have seem lately. It was a 20", 6.8 SS and he wanted $425.00 and I almost bought it but after thinking about it decided to wait and do some more checking. Maybe I'll be ready to buy by the time the next show comes around. Thanks!
