Has anyone ever replaced the front sight base on a mauser? I've got a Turk mauser that looks like it took a knock, the front sight blade is gone and the front sight base is jacked up enough to where a replacement one won't fit correctly.

I've never done one, but seen it done in an artical. IIRC you remove the blade from the dovetail cut, heat the base to soften the silver solder and remove the set screw. Then, with the base still hot, tap it off the front of the barrel. I saw it done in an artical in Shotgun News several years ago when Coffield did a Mauser .45acp conversion. I can't remember which Mauser he used though. It may have been a Spanish Mauser.

I found a site after I made a post with similar instructions. Now I just have to find a replacement. Do you suppose a regular 98 front site base would work with minor fitting?

I guess I'll give it a try.

Thats exactly how you do it, and that was with our Mauser 45 kits, good memory on the article.

you can get replacement Mauser front sights from Gun Parts Corp, they will have a Nazi eagle on them though. You can use a K98 front sight for that Turk Mauser.

the German front sights are longer front to back than the Turkish ones and won't fit properly.  Every country also has a slightly different ID where the sight slips over the barrel.  best bet would be to go to a gun shop/ gun show and measure a few to figure out what country comes the closest....IIRC it should be the Swedish m96.  Springfield Sporters usually has a pretty good selection of parts also.  Century Arms was the last place to have Turkish parts of any quantity....they incorrectly listed them as German M98 parts last time I looked.

Oops, sure enough the Turk Mauser is a short sight, not the long type of a K98.

That looks like the same length as a m95. I dont have my barrels here to look at but the link here shows the short style.

Ok, good to know. I'll take some measurements on the Turk. and see if I can find a large sample size of mausers.

about 10 years ago when Samco Global had a bunch of Swede m96 NOS barrels Swede/ Turk hybrids were not uncommon.....all of the sight parts swapped over without much fiddling.  They would take a Turk with a shot out barrel and install a 6.5x55 M96 barrel.....contours/ everything matched.....making a pretty sweet original looking Turk m38 in 6.5x55.

PM me your address and I'll send you one.
