How would one go about getting a k31 that would be likely to be a good shooter?  can you get them in unfired surplus condition?  Are they generally all in good shape?  anything to look out for?  anyone to avoid when buying one?  anyone known to have good ones?

I'm not sure if you can get them unfired but I would recommended getting one, it is the best shooting surplus rifle I have.  if you can find it as well buy the gp11 ammo, that stuff is great.   I'm fairly certain that they come in a variety of stocks, I believe walnut and beech.  There are others here much more knowledgeable than me but I think the beech stock ones are the lower end rifles, still a great rifle regardless though.

one thing to note is that everything on these rifles has a serial number, make sure they match.  You should be able to find one if you look around at the gun shows.  hell there are two in the gun shop down the road (not that that helps you)

straight bolt is great on these things, I would definitely pick one up as soon as you see one.   price usually ranges from 250-400 from what I've seen.

Recent thread in the C&R forum about K-31's...
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=14&t=337575

For the most part, the surplus condition models are typically all the same no matter who imported them, stock condition can vary but everything else is the same, excellent bores, and very good + finish, very little if any storage wear. Finding an unissued K-31 would prove to be hard and expensive.

I'd suggest getting a $200 beech model from J&G.

Get one from SAMCO, it will be worth the wait.

The ones J&G and AIM have may be PWA imports, PWA puts a GIANT ugly billboard import mark on the side of rear sight base. If you do order one ask who the importer is.

You speak of getting a great one, you will not find one at any dealer online today outside of SimpsonsLTD.

They are the only dealer that sells high end K31's in exceptional condition, a top notch K31 from them have not been carried by other dealers for quite some time. The reason they have such a great selection of quality Swiss rifles is because most of what they sell is on consignment and not recent imports.

The other dealers mentioned are really good to deal with, but keep in mind you get what you pay for. For around $200 don't expect anything speacial condition wise w/ bluing/stock wear and possible non-matching parts.

It all depends on what you want in the end, quality K31's are not common anymore these days without spending extra loot.
