What one caliber/rifle can be used for small game up to deer sized game ???

Really isn't one.  If it's good on deer, it will tear small game up with small, fast, bullets and lots of tissue damage.  If it's good on small game, then it's weak on deer.  A good shotgun will cover both bases at reasonable range.

.243 for small game up to deer.

.30-06 for deer and relatively similarly sized game, on up (to a point).

Browning BLR in 243 will get it done and be light and handy enough to be taken anywhere.
Mount a 1X-4X illuminated optic instead of the usual 3X-9X silliness and it will even work at home for 2 legged vermin.

FWIW, some thoughts:

Using strictly off-the-shelf ammo, I'd go with 20 ga. or 12ga.  #12lead shot up to slugs. 20ga. gets you a little more compactness and weight-savings of carrying extra ammo v. 12ga.

If we take reloading into account, then most any of the aforementioned rifle calibers will fit all the roles required, including taking small game that is still consumable, but a .30 caliber round such as 30-.06 or .308 could be loaded with saboted .223 projectiles to really expand the versatility. You can also load light (110grain) .30cal round-nose projectiles intended for .30cal carbine cartridge to knock out smaller game with minimal tissue disruption.

Finally, someone mentioned 6.5x55. You can down load it to shoot as soft as you wan't, up load it to shoot anything you want, and it's still a good 1,000 meter cartridge. There are many, many good calibers that can meet the first two criteria, but very few that can meet the last.

My vote on the O.P.'s question would be .243 Win., all kinds of factory loads out there for everthing from digger squirrels on up to deer. Very versatile cartridge, handloads open up an even broader spectrum. .

This was my first year using a .243 and I absolutely loved it.  Previously I have hunted with .30-06, .300win mag, .25-06 and .270; the .300win mag would be my choice out of the rest.

I would say 243 but if no limits 6.5x55mm

The 6.5 is a great round for deer. 140gr going 2650 fps, and then use 100gr going 3200 fps

No rifle caliber will do the job.  12 gauge shotgun is the best  choice.  Kills everything from squirrel to bear, from 20 feet to 200 yards (rifled slug barrel and sabot slugs)

I vote for the .250 savage in a Remington 700.  If you like to do things yourself get a Stevens 200.

If you have a .223 with a .22lr conversion kit, you can take just about any game animal on North America.  Sure, for the real big game (Moose, BIG Bear) you might have to shoot them a few times, but you'll still kill them all the same.

Remember, they poach elephants with AKs!

P.S. A shotgun can also do the same if you have the proper shell selection, but ammo is a lot heavier and you can't lug around the same supply.  Think about it; 4 shells of birdshot for four rabbits, squirrels, etc or 4 .22lr shells???  What would you rather carry?

Indeed.  One of the finest rifle cartridges ever developed and my favorite antelope round.

my personal favorite is .300 Whisper,.300/221, 300 blackout.

I have taken so far this year with it.  A whitetail buck, a fox, and a rabbit.

178 Amax going 935 fps

I love this round

haven't been able to test my 130 grain hornady sp going 2050 fps yet.

.30-06 will take any game animal in North America.  Hard to argue with that.  If you're looking for something a little more economical then .308 does just about everything .30-06 does.

.357 Remington Maximum chambered  rifle: it's the centerfire equivalent of the .22 short, .22 LR, and .22 magnum.

180gr-200gr bullets @ 2000-2200 fps. (35 Rem level)

And it can still chamber and shoot all .38 Special and 357 mag loads accurately.

.38 specials can be loaded down to CB levels w/o a suppressor.
