I am thinking about a hunting bolt action gun with a short barrel (no longer than 18"). To do this i am trying to find a round that works well out of a short barrel, but is still large enough for medium to large game.

I would love a 6.8spc bolt (since it was designed to perform out of a short barrel) but i'm not going to spend 800 on this rifle.

Any comments on the 7mm08 in a short barrel config? Any other cartridges i should look at?

I have a Remington 788 in 7mm-08.  It is amazingly accurate.  I would highly recommend that setup.  The 788 has a lot of metal in it.  It is short and very manageable and I like it a whole lot.  If I had to build, ..  My thoughts are if you went that route you could build a very light, easy to carry, easy to shoot hunting weapon.  Great bullet selection either reloading or factory.  Go for it.

Any of the 6.5 caliber cartridges ought to do well.  The long skinny bullets tend to penetrate deeply regardless of velocity.

I was thinking of the stevens 200 and having to barrel cut down. (which would be great since its available in 7-08)

Another question...

Say i wanted to do a semi custom build for a 6.8spc. What would go into the job? Could i get a host gun and change the barrel? Would i need to get a new bolt or could an exsisting bolt work?

Sorry for the questions, i am a total noob to custom bolt guns...

edit- think i just found the rifle i'm looking for....a Ruger Hawkeye Compact. To bad its msrp is $860...yikes!

the .308win would be better in a shorter tube than the 7mm-08.....the .358 win (or .338 fed)would be even better, but not for the recoil shy.

I have seen pictures of a few nice CZ 527 that were converted to 6.8spc from .223.  it requires a new barrel and the smith to open the bolt face slightly to fit the larger rim diameter.  there have been a number of mini-mausers that have been converted in the same way, also.

So a .223 would be a good host for a 6.8spc conversion....that of course makes perfect sense. So maybe i can find a beat up .223 for cheap enough..

yup! most .223 will be good for conversions.  if you want light go with the CZ 527, mini-mauser, or small Sako.  Remy 700 and Savage 110/ Stevens 200 can be used also.  PTG makes properly sized replacement bolts for the 700, not sure about the Savage....you would probably have to open up the .223 bolt face.

I have had a Remington Model 7 7mm-08 since I was 12. It is a bush rifle and is amazingly accurate and devastating to white tail deer and wild hogs.

Commenting strictly on the 7/08... It is the cat's meow.
I have a Model 7 18" I bought for my son when he was ten, and it's so accurate, light and handy we still use it today,
although he's now 6'1", and eighteen.
It's taken a lot of deer.

The 7/08 can be loaded with 130's for kids to shoot, up to 150's for big deer and long distances.

Then i guess the next question would be how much would a 6.8 barrel run me.
The old mohawk might keep its job, it works. But i'll keep all this info in mind, and also keep my eyes open for a 6.8 rem 700 or a dirt cheap host rifle.
