| hey guys, lately I've been thinking about picking up an SKS just to have a cheap plinker in 7.62x39. I know nothing about these rifles and I'm seeing that there are quite a few different variants. Looks like its basically yugo and a chinese models as far as I can tell. Which one model would you recommend and why? I'm looking for something at the lower end of the price spectrum and I do not care about detachable mags. |

I like the chinese or russian. Had a yugo and didn't really care for it, seemed heavy and long compared to the others. ok well thats good info, because I am looking for a shorter rifle. I love the look of the paratrooper model but its more than what I'm looking to spend on one of these. thanks |

Good SKSs now go for about $200+
The Chinese are usally pretty good The Yugos are usually in good shape to unissued, BUT do not have a chrome lined bore The Russians have the best fit and finish, and command the hightest prices usually $350+ There are also Romanian and Albanian ones out there as well, just not a whole lot of them |
| I have a Yugo, that is infact pretty heavy compared to others. I found a Norinco and kind of bought it on impulse. It lookes brand new, and takes AK47 mags. Sweet shooter, if you can find one of these for cheap it's totally worth it! The detachable AK mags make the SKS lots of fun to shoot. |
| +1 on the Norinco Sporter with the AK mags. I traded a junk truck for one of those a couple years ago. It has a sweet trigger and is plenty accurate. I like the thumbhole stock, too. Mine is a little finicky about accepting a mag though, you have to rock it in at just the right angle to reload. I should just get a drum for it. |

There is always someone, or a pawn shop that doesn't know what they are worth and you get a deal, but they are starting around $300 or so. |

Jeez. I was just in a gun shop yesterday and holy crap! SKS's are expensive This shop is known for having some really good deals for the area. They sell new Glocks all day long from $475-$500(Lol, Gander Mtn sells Glocks at a bargain $600+ ) But their SKS's were in the low to mid $300's, I bought my Yugo on the day of obama's inauguration for around $250 maybe a little less. Mosins are still pretty reasonable I guess....

FWIW; I had my Chinese made SKS out to the range last week, after some tune ups. Using Silver Bear 123 gr HP, I was able to get, at 100 yards, groups between 3 and 4". The best five round group was 2.75".
Before the tune up all I could get was between 6 & 8 " @ 100y. Not bad for a rifle that cost $80. in 1993. |

I have bought five SKS rifles over the last two years, including four Norinco's and a Russian Tula, and have yet to pay more than $175 for any of them. Only one of these rifles (one of the Norincos) wasn't complete with bayonet and cleaning rod, and all were in 85% or better condition. Hell, a local pawn shop has one in a cheap plastic side folding stock (Choate?) for $150, and they might take a little less... |
