It's larger than a 1-4X; but the Mueller APV is a great .22 scope.

for optics on the cheap, try a Bushnell. I put a 4-9 varifocal on a 10/2javascript:code();2 and it works well. $45

Take a look at the Nikon Prostaff 4x32 Rimfire Scope.  Great optics, not made in China and nice quality compared to many others.  Walmart sells them for $109 online and my local Walmart sells them for $99.95 so yours may do the same.  I have one on a Ruger 77/22 and it is a perfect match for a rimfire rifle.

The Weaver 2-7x and 4x rimfire scopes are great.  Really nice optics made in Japan.  Theu are about $100.

I won't try to suggest a scope because there are way too many that I haven't tried but think about getting one with a adjustable objective that allows you to focus it at the range you plan to shoot.  Most centerfire scope that aren't AO are set at 100yards and if you are shooting a 25 or 50 yards you might have an issue with hitting what you are aiming at.
