I've never done it before. Should I take it to a gunsmith or try to do it with a do-it yourself kit? Rifle is a 77/22 ruger. Stock will be a microfit.

Try it yourself!!!!!!  Go over to rimfirecentral, they will  help you out!!!  They helped me bed my 10-22 and it shoots lights out.

Get an Accragel kit from Brownells.  Read the directions, then read them again.  disassemble your rifle then read the directions again before starting on it.  Get the metal prepped with clay and release agent, then read the directions again.  Its not hard to do, but if you end up with a mechanical lock, your only option is to get out a chisel to cut the wood away and then buy a new stock.

Did I tell you to read the directions?

I would not glass be a 77/22 myself.  The receiver is light and the barrel is heavy and you will not get the stability you want by glass bedding the action.

For a 77/22 or a 10/22 you will usually (not always, but usually, be better off free-floating the action and glass bedding the barrel.
