Has anyone handloaded the 762x54R cartridge? I know there are tons of cheap surplus military ball available. I am talking the worst case scenario if the military stuff drys up.Before someone says it cant happen, remember we have 2 1/2 years left in King Obama's term as destroyer of the country. I remember the Clinton years with the bans and am afraid of a repeat.
I have a Mosin -Nagant and look at it as a weapon that could be used as a worse case defensive weapon. I am talking about a weapon that would function even with cast bulletsTry that with your AR,AK or SKS. The cost of these rifles even allow one to bury one if there are survivalists out there. What say ye ladies and gentlemen? |

7.62x54R is relatively popular in Finland and people do reload for it. This is basically because it's WW2 background. We used to have large quantities 7.62x54R rifles around, and to degree still do. They are quite popular in vintage rifle competitions and such. 7.62x54R is better know in Finland as 7.62x53R which is more or less the same round. (similar differences as in 5.56 NATO vs. .223 rem)
I don't think you could make cast bullets work on such a powerful rifle, but here is some reloading data: http://www.lapua.com/fileadmin/user_upload/esitteet/VihtavuoriReloadingGuideEdition8.pdf http://www.sako.fi/cartrid_reload.php |

I started reloading the 7.62 Russian when I was in Germany in the late 80s for my M44. Bought a set of Lee dies and use .311 bullets. Looking at getting a bullet mold of 180-200 gr gas check round nose. Planning on keeping the velocity down to around 2300-2400 fps as a 30-30 loaded with 170gr gas checks are at. Don't have any of my reloading data downrange with me at the moment but Accurate Arms as loading data listed in the reloading book. Believe Speer does to.

i have contacted all of the major bullet manufacturers and IIRC, only hornady and sierra make .311 bullets of the soft point variety. i was a little disapointed but such is life. im still debating on whether i want to reload for x54 or not Look at bullets made for 303 British. Many of them are .311 or .312 and will work fine in x54R |

Listen up and don't be a schmoe. Here's a soft-shooting accurate load for the Mosin Nagant rifle. Load 44.0 grains of IMR 4064 powder in front of the 150 grain Sierra .311" softpoint. I used new Winchester brass that I got at a gunshow. Anyway this load shoots well in both the Polish Model 44 carbine and the Finnish M39. And this load is mild enough so that the Model 44 is now pleasant to shoot. |

I have had very good results using .308 diameter bullets in 7.62 x 54R. The bore diameter of these rifles can vary significantly, YMMV. A lot of guys use .308" diameter Hornady VMax bullets in 7.62x39 with good accuracy. I suspect that in some cases, a bullet with a thin jacket and soft lead core might be blown out at the base to conform to the bore diameter, which will do good things for accuracy. That's just an educated wild assed guess on my part, though. I could be full of shit

I have an excell page of loads I have collected from many differnet sources. Some with .308 bullets, some with .311 and .312; many differnent powders. The below load is using what I have most, of already on hand. If you would like, I can email you the full sheet with all the data I have collected, just IM me with your email address. If you email me, it may be a while, as I rarely check this email address. My cases are Norma. I have been looking for cases on sale again, but most right now are $1 each. I think I need to wait until there is another current run for prices to be lower......I hope. I freak out every time one of my $1 cases is lost on the range.
My favorite and most accurate for my PSL is as follows: Bullet Powder Weight Velocity M Velocity O A L avg group Notes 150gr .311 IMR4895 46.0gr 2700fps 2745fps 3.037" 1.5" 5 shot accurate all the way out to 1,000yrds sierra |
