Does anyone know of a web site or forum where one can look up, by serial number, information on the Model 98 German Mauser? Thank you.

Good god man, Google is your friend

. Look up the code on the receiver ring for manuf info. The two digit number most often found below that code is indeed the year of manufacture. For instance, I have a DOU 43 which indicated a Brunn made rifle from 1943.

Not much information is going to be gleaned from the serial number alone, except perhaps around what time of year it was made. Model 98 is a blanket designation for a whole family of Mausers. Which exactly do you have?
