I want a gun chambered for this caliber. I'm more interested in something of the snub nose variety.  I want something that isn't so light that I won't want to put 50rds down range in a single day yet, light enough to carry. A bobbed hammer is preferable but a shrouded one is ok too. My price limit is about 400$  Basically, I'm looking for suggestions since I'm a total revolver noob.

New or used doesn't matter.

Either an S&W 442 or 642 if you want light weight. 640 if you want all steel. Look for a non-internal lock model. They still make the 442 / 642 without the lock. All of these are hammerless. If you want a bobbed hammer then get a 337/36/37 and have the hammer bobbed.

They all have long history's and proven track records. Plenty of holster options available.

What's with all the hate and discontent with regards to the lock or no lock S&W's?  Does it affect trigger pull or something?

There have been instances where the lock malfunctioned and turned the pistol into a expensive rock until repairs could be made. This is mainly on the lightweight and/or heavy caliber revolvers. I also have a beef with the general idea of the lock. If they offered all of their revolvers without locks as well as with I would be more tolerant.

is there any way to take one out? I really like the looks of the S&W's and can get one at pretty close to dealer cost.

Surplus S&W model 10's can be found very cheap, usually under $200.

I have heard of the locks being removed and the wholes being filled. I will always have the attitude of why screw with a good thing ( the lock in the first place).

Mil / LE cost and even what places like Bud's sell  around the price you are looking at. Sometimes you can find them at $379 new. OMB ran some sales on them lately.

How hard is it to find parts for these? It's not a snub nose but damn 189$ for a S&W?  Why so cheap?

This. I have an S&W 442 but I would go the LCR route next time. Nice having something that is both black and stainless (cylinder) for a carry piece.

The are double action only, PD trade in guns. The M10 was originally introduced in the late 1890's as the Military and Police Model and has been in production with minor and major changes ever since. I think it's actually the only blued gun to survive the S&W "stainless only" phase of idiocy in the 90's. Very likely one of the top five if someone made a list of most common handguns.

ETA: buy a ruger SP101. I like S&W's with the exception of the J(too small) and X frames(way too big). Also, it's easy to remove the lock on a newer S&W. The SP101 doesn't have one––-the LCR does.

But wouldn't he just have to swap out the hammer to a standard one to get single action capability back?
