Im thinking about picking up a NEF 45-70 single shot rifle, 20" barrel.
Its cheap (I dont have alot of money to spend), and I need something new to play with. I dont have any large calber rigles yet, just a few 5.56s, so Id really like something with some power and kick. Will I be satisfied with it? |

The NEF .45-70 doesn't has some power, and a lot more than just "some" kick. The first time I took mine out to shoot it, I fired 3 boxes of ammo through it. Freakin' OUCH.
By the next trip, I had traded it off in favor of a Sharps replica that weighed 13lbs...MUCH more pleasant to shoot. |

I bought one years ago for Plainsman shooting and cowboy side matches. It shoots way better than it should for the price.
When I first got it, worked up a load with 5744 and 405 gr Bear Creek moly coated lead bullets. Best load was four five shot groups 1 3/8" to 1 9/16" at 100 yards with stock sights, chrono'd at 1300 fps. Plainsman load is a 300 gr lead Bear Creek with a case full of 2f, runs just over 2" at 100. Get the Williams WGOS rear sight for 1" diameter barrel, and standard notch blade. Mounts right on the receiver with the factory holes. Then get an Uncle Mikes rubber slip-on buttpad, medium size IIRC. Rifle is not bad to shoot, kind of like a hard shove instead of heavy kick. Gun is a blast to shoot, now I'm looking for one in .223 with an ejector to build a high speed low drag tactical mall ninja gun. |
