Does anyone know if it is possible for non/LEO or .gov types to run serial numbers on a gun? Id like to see what information is out there on guns that I own, as well as for potential used purchases in the future. How do you folks that buy guns from across the country sight unseen check to make sure the gun is legit before you send out your money? Ive never really researched this but was hoping someone had an idea.

Thanks

Dale

I call my local SO and using the provided weapon or optic sn# they can tell you if it has been "reported" as stolen and is listed in NCIC.  That is about the best you can do.

I don't worry about it.

I always have and always will buy NIB from a store.

In Florida, FDLE has a Serial Number search on their website. If it comes up stolen it will show where it was reported, when, and what agency you should contact.

I did find a couple of websites that were basically privately operated stolen gun lists. didnt seem to help much. I know a couple of cops, can a regular beat cop check this NCIS list?

Yes.... he gets the info and has dispatch check the State Database and the Federal Database. In Florida the State is the FCIC and the Fed is the NCIC.

Just because it's NIB doesn't mean it wasn't stolen.  It can still get seized as evidence and returned to the previous owner.

I've found that the State police have always been helpful.....you can also contact the local branch of the BATF.

If it's local...drop by a pawn shop and chat for a while....a lot of them get "HOT SHEETS" from local PD....with list of regional stolen property.

The local around here are usually ok with an inquiry.....it says to them....you're trying to do the right thing.

Gunbroker has a list of stolen firearms to keep an eye out for.  Also in recent changes regular individuals can call their BCI to check on an individual buying a gun as well as check the serial number.  Unfortunately, few actually keep records of their guns serial numbers and are unable to report them using serial numbers (I'm sure everyone on this forum does it, I'm talking about the countless others who exceed our numbers).  When buying from a private individual there are plenty of things you can try to do, but honestly you may never know for sure until some knocks on your door looking for it.  Good luck and stay safe.
