When using a suppressor there is a boost in velocity. The boost is attributed to the bullet not having the drag of being pushed down a rifled bore while still having pressure pushing it along. Also, accuracy increases are attributed to this also.

I was thinking why could a barrel that had the same features as a barrel with a suppressor not be made? Basically, a partially rifled with the remainder being opened up enough to allow the bullet to benefit from the free bore boost like a suppressor.

I know they make “bloop tubes” but the bore on those is much larger than the bullet. If the diameter of the smooth portion of the barrel was only slightly larger than the bullet would this cause an increase also?

A barrel does not need to be fully rifled to be accurate so this seems like this might work.

What do you think?

Interesting idea. I'd be surprised if it hasn't been tried before though.

you just described a muzzle brake.  the boost you get will be far less than if you had replaced that extra length with more barrel.

Good comparison.  The suppressor also "traps" the gases as the bullet exits the barrel and makes for a more stable platform to slow down the buffeting th bullet receives as it exits the bore, but a muzzle brake "vents" the gasses away instead of slowing their release like a silencer.  Also, a silencer boosts velocity less than a comparable length of barrel.

Are you sure the accuracy gains are due to free bore boost or the fact the suppressor itself is acting as a muzzle weight that dampens barrel harmonics?

this.

also what you described in counter-bore.  they did it a lot to old WW2 rifles, like the Mosin Nagant, when the muzzle end would be damaged and the rifling damaged, they would counter bore a few inches down the muzzle until they hit rifling that wasnt damaged.  same idea, much smaller scale.  take a mosin, they are like $80, and have it counter-bored half way down the barrel, and see if you theory holds.

I have a few spare 10/22 barrels laying around. I know there may not be as much of a gain but if it does maybe I'll try a centerfire. The biggest obstacle right now is I need to buy a chronograph so I can test.

you can get the same effect without any firearm mods by using bore rider bullets like those made by GS Custom out of South Africa.  from what i hear they are very accurate and get substantially increased velocity and usually with less pressure.  I have yet to try them myself, but plan on soon.
