I was not sure where to put this...

What is a basic ammo count and type (JHP/FMJ/AP/etc) one should have on hand for worst case scenarios for the following calibers -

9mm - ?

.45 ACP - ?

5.56 - ?

12 ga. - ?

.308 - ?

Thank you for your time and responses.

I'd say 500 per handgun and 1000 for each primary rifle.

As much as you can afford (don't neglect food/shelter/being debt free), or until the floorboards start to buckle (then get in the crawl space and install braces, add more.).

Debt free?  We're in America damnit!  You MUST have debt to be an American!!!  HAHA.  I appreciate the sentiment.

500 per handgun, 1K per rifle sounds about what I had in mind...

How about going more specific, such as:

12 ga - 20 rounds Tear Gas
            100 rounds Slug
            100 rounds 00 Buckshot
            100 rounds “Walmart Special”

Thoughts?

Unless the world is coming to an end; shooting tear gas rounds at someone probably isn't the best idea.  You should be shooting at anyone unless your life is in danger, and if it is tear gas isn't going to stop the threat.

As far as SHTF ammo goes; I'd feel comfortable with a couple hundred rounds of quality self-defense ammo in one of the handgun calibers.  For the rifle I'd pick the .223 and get a few hundred rounds of SD ammo for that.

The stuff you should "stockpile" is ammo that you plan on shooting.  This protects you against shortages and price increases.  Buy it cheap; stack it deep.

As much as you can get or afford....ammo is one thing you can't have too much of

lol, rgr, thanks all.

The tear gas actually works well against bears in my area, which is why I included it in the list.

don't forget .22lr.......and at least 2k- 3k of it.

Quoted:

9mm -1k

.45 ACP - 1k

5.56 - 5k

12 ga. - 2k

.308 - 10k

Now you have enough no matter what.

But remember it only takes one bullet to put you out of the fight and leave someone else well armed.

Gotta agree here.

It's all opinion.

I have many of the same calibers. Here's what I'm shooting for

5.56 - 1000 rounds  (have two AR's but can't afford to go over 1000 rounds yet)
7.62x39 - 2500 rounds (have an AK and SKS)
.22 - 5500 rounds or one .50 cal can full
12 gauge - 500 rounds - 00 buck, slugs, etc
9mm - 2500 rounds (Glocks, P-38 to feed)

7.62x25 - 2500 rounds (1 Tokarev, but it's cheap ammo)

200 rounds for each gun

anymore is useless in real situations

This is quite the loaded question. There are all different types of scenarios you must consider to get the proper "inventory."

As a rule of thumb, prepare for the most likely scenario first. Make a list of things you want to be prepared for and identify what is most likely to happen. This applies to all survival measures.

Example:

1. Flat Tire

2. Power Outage

3. Inclement Weather

4. Job Loss

5. Serious Injury

6. Tornado/Hurricane/Monsoon Rains

7. Riots

8. Martial Law

9. Economic Collapse

10. Terrorist Attack

11. Revolution

12. Foreign Invasion

13. Zombies

That is just a quick list. As you can see, you can get by the first 6 easily with a handgun and 3 mags. Personal defense isn't a huge issue until the world starts crumbling around you.

Then you need to take into account whether you are bugging out or staying home. You can't carry 5k rounds on your back, but you can stock up your home or load up a vehicle.

So in general, for a well rounded medium, I would say that it is best to keep 200 personal defense rounds per person for backup weapons (pistols, shotguns) and 1000 rounds for the long guns in good quality, personal protection rounds.

If you plan on staying put and "fighting to the end" there is no limit.

If you realize you will have to bug out or be on the go, you will be limited.

In a real life, true to the core melt down, most folks will have to be on the go due to food and water requirements.  VERY FEW of us are capable of "digging in" for the long haul.

Really ?
What do you  envision , your property littered with bodies of aggressors attemting to storm your bunker ? No matter what the situation a TANK would come to investigate WTF was going on if that were the case.

This isn't GD so I will skip the discussion on why having a lot of ammo is worthless for small groups or single individuals . I will say having a large amount of ammo may make you feel all warm and cozy but it really does nothing to increase your safety .

Thanks for the replies folks.  I have a general idea on what is standard rule now.

One shot, one kill.

I did NOT want to be carrying thouhsands of round around, lol.

My thoughts on gobs of ammo.  Yes, it makes me all warm and fuzzy (so does my food pantry).  I also like to plink/practice with my rifles, so the more the merrier.  When I lived in L.A., riots were a real threat.  I wasn't gonna be able to stroll down to B&B's a few blocks away to resupply if I ran out of my mag of ammo.  Take a look at your area, make a logical estimate, then double it and you'll be fine.

As much as you can afford/have room for. Remember, there is more to ammo than just shooting it. In a EOTWAWKI situation, ammo, food, clothing, and information will be the new currency.
