| When I hear someone discussing a 45 ACP handgun my mind very quickly turns to the 1911. Because to me the 1911 defines what a 45 ACP handgun should be. Which guns define the most common calibers to you ? |

These are just the first guns I think of...not necissarily the most common, the best, or the "quintessential" gun of that caliber.

The .45 acp evokes the 1911 because for decades the 1911 was basically the platform for the cartridge.
Only a few cartridges that immediately bring a particular weapon (and only one to mind) Interestingly enough, they all started out as military cartridges. .45 acp - 1911 .45 Colt - Colt SAA .445 Webley - Webley Mk VI 30-40 - Krag 30-30 - Winchester Model 1894 .303 - Enfield 8mm Mauser - 98 Mauser (duh) .50 BMG - M2 Machine gun .30 Carbine - M1 Carbine 60 years ago, 9mm meant Luger. These days there are hundreds of designs that use the cartridge. |
