When I hear someone discussing a 45 ACP handgun my mind very quickly turns to the 1911. Because to me the 1911 defines what a 45 ACP handgun should be. Which guns define the most common calibers to you ?

The .45 acp evokes the 1911 because for decades the 1911 was basically the platform for the cartridge.

Only a  few cartridges that immediately bring a particular weapon (and only one to mind)  Interestingly enough, they all started out as military cartridges.

.45 acp - 1911
.45 Colt - Colt SAA
.445 Webley - Webley Mk VI

30-40 - Krag
30-30 - Winchester Model 1894
.303 - Enfield
8mm Mauser - 98 Mauser (duh)
.50 BMG - M2 Machine gun
.30 Carbine - M1 Carbine

60 years ago, 9mm meant Luger. These days there are hundreds of designs that use the cartridge.
