Could you please recommend a rifle for my niece?  We are looking at various youth models right now and cannot decide on caliber and model.  She is 7, and very petite.  She will be using it for deer mainly, but also pigs/varmints.  Can you please give your opinions on model and caliber for this youngen?

Few more details:  wont be shot over 200 yards, optics will be just a normal 3-9X40.

Thanks for your help.

.243 Winchester

Look at the Savages, because after a few years you can re-barrel to something bigger like .308 Win, easy to do.

I'm going to go in a different direction and say 6.5x55.

I would consider the Remington 700 Youth in .243 Winchester.

I'm going to vote for the .243 as well.  My 8 and 10 year old boys just fired my wifes .260 Rem. Mountain Rifle (fairly light at about 7.5 -8 lbs w/ scope) for the first time a few weeks ago and it rocked their world pretty good.  A 60-70 lb kid is moved pretty far by a .260's recoil.  My ten year old was game to take a few shots but my 8 year old had enough at one.  (All this shooting is from a bench as they aren't strong enough to hold up the gun on their own yet.)

243 is the conventional choice.  Given your description as a petite 7 y/o don't be surprised if the 243 is a bit much.  If at all possible have her try  before buy.

Why not  a Thompson/Center in 6mmPPC, or the like?  You can trim the stock, then, change it and calibers as she grows.
