I don't think the SR-556 does anything that already has not been done or tried before.

Ruger probably does not have the experience or the capacity to handle a full-on .mil contract, but they are probably very deep in talks with Colt to subcontract some of the work should the current M4 contract be renewed or if they were to get a new one.  The presence of the Sr-556 is probably proof of their capability.

Owning both the SR-556 and a M16, I contacted Ruger about the possibility of a full auto Ruger SR-556 bolt carrier so I could use the Ruger upper on my M16 lower.  Ruger said no plans to build full auto bolt carriers or SR-556's.  I then contacted Spikes and Adams Arms...both told me their gas piston bolt carrier will not work in the SR-556 upper.  I then contacted CMMG, but no reply as to whether their bolt carrier would work in the SR-556 upper, but they did say their gas piston upper assembly will work on the M16 lower and provide full auto capability.  The search goes on....

try to dig up one of those old bolt-carrier conversion parts that were made back-in-the-day. they were a cheap way to make your AR15 carrier function with a DIAS.

Won't work; it won't fit the Ruger carrier.  The conversion was meant to convert a Colt AR15 carrier bottom to M16 spec.  The bottom of the Ruger carrier is part way inbetween AR15 and M16.  Thank you for the suggestion though.
