The local Bass Pro has an old Sears Ted Williams .30-06 on the shelf.

Its obviously a Win 70 in Sears clothing and has the fancy basket weave carved stock (not stamped) with end caps and hooded sight (lookin pretty darn good).

I know the Sears & Western Autos are not clasic collector's items but is the $400 on the tag a decent price?

Or should I haggle like hell over it?  Or just let it go?

My logic would be that it is a Winchester Model 70 made "before they got crappy".  If the blueing, stock, and bore were good then I would buy it in a heartbeat over a modern $400 economy rifle.

What do you want to do?   How rich are you?  Do you have disposable income this month?  Do you want to make money on the rifle later?

If you want to make money on it.........then, no I would not buy it.  If you are looking for a good deer rifle, then buy it.  If you are looking for a new 30/06 and want to be economical, then buy it.

I have no logical, Kelley Blue Book kind of knowledge to base my decision on, but I think that it would be a well crafted firearm.  I think that it would be a good value at $400.

Value is as a shooter.

Anything Bass Pro sells is priced higher than it should be.  The question is if this rifle is worth $400 to you....after all, it's not like you can go down the street and find that same rifle in another store.  You can bet they paid between $250 and $300 for that gun.  Not sure if they haggle on the numbers at all.

Thanks for the input.  They'll knock $50 off of it now but I figured I'd wait a month or so & see if they'll go lower.  If someone beats me to it, so be it.

And, Yes, they tend to be a little high.  Gotta pay for that fancy building.

$350?

I wouldnt wait.........someone will probably scarf it up.

$350 for a Mod 70, regardless of how its marked, is a pretty good deal.
Its getting closer to hunting season , so your not the only one thinking of picking up a deer rifle
