I found an old family gun, a 30-06 winchester bolt completely covered in rust head to toe. Is there anyway to restore it? I was thinking of scrubbing it down with CLP and steel wool, maybe a little fine grit sand paper, and then reblueing it. Any advice? Abandon?

Thanks

Bead blast and re-finish.

Sand blast, rust blue the metal, refinish the wood.  You'll be so happy you did.

ETA: I'll take it as a project if you really want to ditch it.  Lots of work, but worthy result.

Bead blast and parkarize goes a long way to hiding mild surface pitting.
If the pitting is deep, the rifle may have become a wall hanger.

CLP and 0000 steel wool will clean off the rust. Then wipe down with several clean cloths with a little CLP.

How deep is the rust???

How does the bore look after a good scrubbing????  Any pits???

Fucking rust never sleeps. I hate rust.

But a really light surface rust shouldn't be too bad to restore.

I've been a machanic most my adult life.
I recently have been layed off, but the shop I worked for for the last 8 years has a sulution that we used for removing rust. It is a liquid you soak the parts in for up to 24 hours. It kills the rust, and it will come right off. It will leave a black residue that needs to be removed with a nylon brush.

Metal majic is one name, there is another similar product, but dont remember the name.
The stuff really is amazing on rust. Do a search, you might find a place that sells "samples"
Good luck

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. The pitting/rust does not seem to be too detrimental. I'll definitely scrub it down, blast it, and reblue. I'll post pictures perhaps along the way if you guys are interested. A good range report I think should help determine if it's a hanger or not.

I'll look into that metal majic. Thanks for the tip.

Regards,
Justin

You might skip the abrasive media route and look into an electrolysis type rust removal bath.  You can do it from home fairly easily - search around, as some members have done it with great success.
