I've been reading about this cartridge online and it seems to be pretty competitive to the 50bmg.

From what I can tell it seems to have a little more power than the BMG has with it , so I'm curious
as to any firearms that are available in the US that are chambered for it.

It could be pretty cool IF someone was able to import russian surplus as i'm sure there's a ton
on the market.

I'm pretty sure it actually has less power than the .50 BMG, but my memory could be failing me, at the moment.

From my understanding , using ball ammo , the 12.7 is a bit hotter (longer case) than the 50bmg

As far as I am aware there are no weapons in this caliber available in the US and there is no ammo in this caliber available either.

Warsaw Pact countries used this round extensivley and the USSR used it back before WWII

the dshk is the most famous firearm in this caliber it is a belt fed HMG like the M2

the v-94 and gerad sniper rifles are also in this caliber

Which would stand to reason. Maybe the x108 case is tapers more. I have no idea.

If I remember correctly the reason we don't see it here is that ATF ruled the the .50 BMG case is the largest on a Class 1 form and that the Soviet 12.7x108 is classified as a DD.

ask and you shall recieve -

from left to right

5.56  -  7.62x39  - .50 BMG  (12.7 x 99) - 12.7 x 109 (DSHK / russian .50) - 14.5MM

12.7x108 drives an 800-something grain bullet to about 2800 fps. It is a bit more powerful than .50 BMG.

The 14.5mm is utter badass. It produces about 23,000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. I'd really like to have a M99ish rifle in 14.5 and a supply of ammo.

I thought it was bullet diameter that was the dealbreaker.  We measure land-land, the Russians tend to measure groove-groove.  Explaining why their 7.62mm is marginally larger in diameter than our 7.62mm.  I thought the same applied for the 12.7mm - theirs is slightly larger diameter and thus falls outside the ATF's definition of sporting arm.

You are probably correct.  I know the US military has always called the Soviet 12.7mm a .51 cal.
