A friend and I were talking yesterday and he said he was having some trouble with these medical bills he has.  Long story short, he asked me if there were any places I knew that could do appraisals.  He said he could go to a gun store but I told him it would more than likely be a scenario in which you walked up to a mechanic and said, "I know nothing about cars" right off the bat.  I didn't know what to say, and I decided to ask some people who might.

How should he go about this?

tell us what the guns are, what condition they're in, and we give you a price...honestly this is your best bet but it's not "official" or set in stone

Most book stores will have Fjestad's Blue Book.  Grade conservative.  Figure dealer will offer about two thirds of Blue Book value.  Private sale will go higher.

There is some local variation in prices, depending on a lot of factors.  Most grade their guns higher than they really are.  And used is used, doesn't matter if its 100 rounds or 5000.

I typically go to gunbroker and do a search for whatever gun and completed auctions.  This shows actual selling prices.  I usually filter it so it shows the highest number of bids first, so you don't have to sort through all of the high-asking-price stuff that nobody ever bid on.

Good deals.  I'll let him know.  Thanks.
