As of right now, I'm planning on buying a Shooters Connection Range bag:

But I want a B.O.B. range bag and then also a smaller one for actual range use.

They have both the big, main shooters bag & they also have the smaller competition bag.

I also want the the smaller range bag to dub as a normal duffle bag for other various travel.

Now I have no problem with spending the money to get the quality, but is there any other suggestions out there for a smaller range bag that is less expensive than the Shooters Connection competition bag, but still all of the same quality & pockets etc?

I use one of THESE as a range bag, and another as a get home bag.

When you look at the price your first thought will be that the quality must suck-it's actually just the opposite. It's the nicest bag of it's kind that I've ever owned. It's made with heavy duty materials, YKK zippers, and real velcro. It's hard to judge the size from the pictures. I can just squeeze a 15.4" laptop inside of it.

From the website:

Available in Black, OD Green, and Tan

This bag was originally designed for law enforcement (LAPD) and some of our friends in the U.S. military. Our earlier Bail-Out Bags are still in heavy daily use with: LAPD, San Jose P.D., Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office, San Francisco P.D. and individual officers across the country. They were designed from the ground up to be the ultimate personal gear carry/last resort bailout bag.

"Gen 5" Improvements:

Polyester lining to protect your delicate items from scratching
Plasiticoat treated YKK Metal Zipper Bat Handles to reduce Possibility of corrosion caused by your working environment.
Now by popular demand, they are available in OLIVE DRAB, BLACK, or Desert Tan
Wider, more comfortable removable shoulder strap
Old 5 Cell, flashlight pocket has been replaced with a tubular pocket to hold irregular items even your emergency shaving kit and toothbrush.
NEW LOWER PRICE!!
The "Gen 5" Still Has These Important Features:

Only YKK brand zippers and real Velcro used throughout
Hidden full size gun pocket.
Two adjustable side pockets for radios.
Large main pocket has a removable stiffener/divider system to organize gear.
"Stinger/Surefire"(tm) pocket.
Two pen pockets.
Tactical illuminator pocket.
Four accessory pockets for gun magazines, etc with Velcro closures.
Large side zippered pocket for wallet, passport, keys and other valuables.
The bag measures approximately 14" x 10" x 6"
Padded Removable Shoulder Strap INCLUDED.
Carry Handles Of Heavy Nylon Webbing, Running The Entire length and across the bottom for extra secure support.
Large YKK Zippers With Para cord Pulls (for when your fine motor skills are shutting down or when it's just plain cold).
Velcro Patch on side pocket to attach name tape, flight suit tag or unit patch.

This is by far the most popular smaller sized gear bag we have ever sold!

Chuck is a good guy! And that is a great bag, seen a lot in USPSA/IPSC however the price scares some casual shooters away, also consider the iSHOT bags.

I've heard good things about the Midway Range Bag.  I don't have one, but hoping somebody will buy me one for a graduation present.

I have both the large and small Midway bags.  They are great but the large bag can get pretty heavy when fully loaded.  Also, don't use either as a barrel rest for shooting unless you put something between the barrel and the bad or the bag will melt to your barrel and you;ll have a mess to clean up.

I've had a midway bag for over a year now, loaded it a couple of times up to 60+lbs using the sholder strap no riping or tearing, holds up nicely.

Will probably buy another in the next month or so.

Look at tool bags, they have lots of pockets, and are very tough, and can be had for a fraction of the price of "range" bags.  I have been using them for years and there are plenty out there to choose from.  Its not tacticool but they work great.

Any word on the Tactical Tailor or 5.11 range bags?

My biggest issue with all these bags is they are lined with black material on the inside...makes for a dark interior where small things seem to disappear.
My Mountainsmith pack is lined with bright yellow nylon & you can instantly see everything inside. Last week a guy at the range had a  Blackhawk MOB bag - size medium - in tan and the inside was tan as well. This is my next range bag. YMMV
