Just wondering how many 45/70 shooters are on the forum here? and What firearm are you shooting for this caliber?
Also if you reload - whats your favorite load for the 45/70? |
I don't reload yet,but when I do this will be the one I cut my theeth with.
| Wife bought me an 1895 for Christmas. I have added peep sights and a sling. The first 3 rounds I fired out of it when into one hole at 50 yards with her and god as my witness. I figured it was a fluke and proceeded to do it again. Ammo was factory Hornady Leverevolution 325 grn. |
| Picked up a 1873 Springfield Cadet rifle from the wife's family this winter. My brother and I were able to hold a 2.5" group using the original irons at 100 yards with 405gr bullets and 40gr of Varget. I plan on using it at the local club's antique rifle match this summer. |

I've got a 122 year old trapdoor rifle that some bubba in the distant past cut the stock down on.
I've never shot it, but someday I will. There's a company out there who sells trapdoor parts incuding just the forend section of the stock. I intend to join this section and get the rest of the front end hardware and bring it back to the way it's supposed to look. |

My wife & I are shooting a Match in MT this weekend...... .45-70 Rem. Rolling Block for silhouette (220M- 550M) & an original 1878 Sharps Borchardt .45-90 for the Long Range Creedmoor (800- 1000 yds.). Both are BP loads with hand cast bullets..
My favorite load for the .45-70 is a 525 gr. "Money Bullet" from Buffalo Arms over 66 grs. of Swiss 1.5 BP. It was good for 10 pigs, 10 turkeys, (screwed up the rams :>(- different bullet) & 7 chickens for a match win on the last outing.. |
| I've got a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in stainless. I put peep sights on it and now it is the perfect hunt anything rifle. Super easy to carry around in the deer woods and as others have said very accurate. I have played around with a few different reloads but I always go back to Leverevolution 325gr factory loads. You just cant beat the performance for that price of factory 45/70 ammo for almost any hunting condition. |
| I have a guide gun ,my favorite load would be the leverevolution,I have also fired garrets 540grn hammerhead(kicks like a dancin' mule) I got to get some dies though.The factory stuff is just too damn expensive,I was surprised at how accurate that little marlin is with pretty much any ammo. |

I gots 2 45-70s Marlin 1895 stainless levers. One, stock with XS sights and scout mount with a Burris Fastfire. De utter, XS full rail with Zeiss Z point ,barrel cut to 16.25" tastefully finished with a Vortex flash hider.
I wants a Handi rifle after seeing the one above, hot and sexy.....That #1 is sexy too. Favorite load fo da range- 300gr lasercast with 45gr of H4895 in a winchester case with win primer. Too fun! Favorite load for under destruction- 350gr Rem softpoint hollowpoint with brass base on top of 45 gr of H4895. |

My Buffalo Classic has twice the barrel length and does a fine job of generating recoil. But not as much as your gun I bet! How does the Lever Evolution ammo shoot from your Handi-Rifle? Marlin 1895 guide gun & TC Contender 12"
I reload & cast my own bullets. Don't really have one favorite load yet, theres too damn many choices to experiment with. Although now that Hornady offers the 325 gr FTX for reloading..... also I've got to pick up a box of the 86 grain Lehigh bullets to load up, there's just something about getting 3000 FPS and a ten foot flame/muzzle blast out of a 45/70 that I just have to.

COOP - Do you load these in a 45/70 or a SOCOM? These are not made for a 45/70 are they? I know the are .458 but they may be too light....???

I've got Ruger #3 in 45/70. It is a 200th Year American Liberty rifle.
I've loaded the 350 gr round nose up to near 458 Win Magnum levels and it kicks like a pissed off bay mule. I call that load my "rhino load". 
I don't shoot it too often anymore. Especially since I had my chest split a few months ago. But I sure do like that rifle.
