What is a 'slugged' barrel? Why is it done? Thank you |

When I think of slugging a barrel, it means to drive a soft lead oversized slug through the bore of a firearm to determine the exact bore diameter. Mostly importiant for shooting cast bullets. You can also use this methid to slug the cylinder mouths of a revolver to see how they relate to your bore. If they are undersized compared to your bore, you'll usually have poor accuracy. Some guns, like Ruger Singl Actions often have bore restrictions at some point. The rugers often are this way as the barrel gets screwed into the frame, the bore is actually compressed a small amount. that means that your bullet is sized down as it passes through the restriction and then is undersized as it travels down teh reaminder of the barre; Not good for accuraccy or leading at all.
