At risk of being shunned by the group, I must ask, is there a good Mini 14 forum anywhere?
My Dept is allowing ARs and Minis as patrol rifles and, although I will be using one of my ARs, some of the Deputies have asked me about Minis. I have a old GB but just fingered a new Mini that has a reconfigured barrel and receiver and is just damned nice. Would be a great option for a non gun geek Deputy as opposed to an AAR, IMO. So, where to look? Thanks! |

I have seen one before, I think it was www.alloverthepaper.com Kind of sounds like my Colt AR. hehehehehe. I'm just kidding. It's actually pretty accurate WITH THE RIGHT AMMO. But it is very picky and the POI shift from one ammo to another is terrible. I guess I just got a lemon though. Personally, I want to get a Mini, just to see how bad they are, or if it's just BS. I actually like the feel of a traditional stock over pistol grip also. I know, I'm weird. If my M1A was about 3 lbs lighter, and came in something a little less stiff in recoil than a .308 out of a 6lb rifle, than I wouldn't even think to shoot my AR. The M1 carbine sort of fits the bill, but I have yet to make mine very reliable. |
| Anyone who ever mentions it get so flamed by the AR guys it's not even funny. Then, if they ask a question in the M14 forum, where most of those guys are even a bit more reasonable than the average folk around here, there's still one or two that raise a big ruckus about it not being the same kind of rifle. They can't win here. It's just the truth. I always find myself being drawn to such downtrodden for some reason. But I have yet to ever buy one. Last time I shot one was when I was like 8 years old and it was the first centerfire rifle I ever shot. I had no clue how to use the aperture sight and they didn't really take the time to show me. And I think I closed my eyes because of the recoil back then. |

The new Mini-14s aren't so bad. A Mini-14 sub forum would get a lot of hits!!!.... http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/mbmphoto/Mini14A.jpg |

So i picked up one of these last weekend
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/images/Products/437L.jpg I haven't gotten to go shoot it yet i've been super busy. I know it's not going to be an accurate long range shooter, but my pops has one, and they are fun as hell to shoot. I snagged this one b/c of the 16inch barrel, i figured it would be even more handy with the shorter length...I'll let you guys know how it shoots once i get her out.....oh and it came with a 20rnd mag to. |
| AlanP I have one just like yours with the light barrel. I bought it about two years ago before Ruger was releasing them t the public. I got through the PD I work for. I love mine. i used it in a carbine class with a bunch of guys with AR-15s and it worked great. The only down side is the magazines. I only use factory Ruger 20 rounders with my rifle. I just bght a stainless GB just like my other one. You wont be disappointed. John |

So how's she shoot? I like how the buttstock isn't curved any longer. I also like the fact that you can shoot 5.56. Cmon RANGER REPORT!!!!!!!!!!! I had it at the range a couple weeks ago for the first time. It took several rounds to get the scope on target. I was not shooting paper. I was shooting clay pigeons on the berm at the end of the shooting range (110 yards). My ammo was Wolf steel case FMJ and HP. The pigeons were laying at an angle to me so they were a 4 X 3 inch target at best. I broke three clays with four shoots. With better ammo I am sure this will be a 2 MOA rifle if not better. I like it so much I bought this one too...... http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e350/mbmphoto/Mini14SSA.jpg |

Sorry for being nosy, but what did you have to give for your Tactical? I've been eyeballing those things since the last gunshow!!!! I wish they were available in stainless, although I did see one in SS, but it was installed in a Tapco stock and about 300 bucks higher than it needed to be, grrrrrrr Rick SGF, Mo. PS. Here's a pic of my older GB.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures but I have:
1) AC-556F...which is the blued factory folder with the short barrel. 2) Mini-14...stainless factory folder. 3) Mini-14...blued factory folder which is unusual as it has some kind of Scandinavian crest proof marks on the receiver, original factory AC-556 long barrel with the notch in the barrel for them to cut to length to be a short barrel AC-556, the AC-556 front sight gas block and has the Carson City Indian Reservation PD # etched into the receiver as well. I bought it from a dealer at a gunshow in SLC back in '98 who had traded/bought it from the Reservation PD. |

Not to bad considering my dad bought a standard ranch a few weeks ago from walmart for 604 i think it came to 660 after tax and all. I love the gun so far, i just haven't gotten to shoot it yet haha will this weekend tho. I'm going to ither get a few more ruger mags, or check out some of the pmags, they are supposed to be pretty decent. |

You might have to wait on the backorder, but Ruger is selling their 20 rounders direct until the end of January for 29.95. I ordered 5 a while back and received them already. Been thinking about ordering a few more before the end of the month. Check them out here: Ruger Mini 14 mag sale BTW, that was a pretty darned good price you got on that Tactical. The one I was looking at was 729 then the added tax. It would have been getting awfully close to the 800 dollar mark. Might wait and see if some show up on the used market, although I know we're probably running out of time

My wood stocked Ruger Mini-14 is a Walmart Special. $604 plus tax. It shoots .223 Remington and 5.56 X 45 ammo.
