Just picked up a German K98 Mauser today at a gunshow.

Just wondering if anyone knew where I could find some decent priced and decent ammo for it. Prefferably non-corrosive but either way, like to stock up on my calibers.

Thanks in advance!

Also, where can I find some more info on these rifles. I know the basics of the history, but would like to know about the different codes on these rifles.

Do you want cheap ammo, or do you want non-corrosive ammo?

Get surplus Turkish ammo from www.bigdogammo.com if they still have it.

www.aimsurplus.com had some good deals on 8mm too....

Both are corrosive, well at least the Turk is.... I don't know about the other stuff (Romanian?).

Doesn't matter..... just use some Windex w/ Ammonia and it will clean up fine.

People over-estimate the power of corrosive ammo.... it will cause damage faster than non-corrosive primers.... but you aren't going to discover your rifle rusted in half 15 minutes after you finish shooting, it isn't that bad.

Sounds good, thank you.

As for the corrosive ammo, I know that it isnt as bad as some lead on too..
But Ive been known to be lazy a time or two after a range session. Thats the only reason I preffer non-corosive.

So I can be lazy a time or two

Thanks again

If you ever get in to handloading for it, I have a good recipe. I don't have experience with factory 8mm ammo. Let me know if you want the info.

The K98's are awesome rifles.

I've never had a problem with the corrosive stuff but I always clean as soon as I get home.  I usually have a bottle of windex with me.  I'll spray down the barrel and bolt before going home.

8mm is not as cheap as it used to be.  I remember two years ago I could get a case of 800 from Century for around $40 shipped.  I had a really hard time passing it up at the price.  I think my grandkids grandkids will be using the stash.

The Paralax c&r forums used to be pretty good.  Havn't went there for a few years..so maybe it's still up?

If you are willing to spend a few bucks, buy "Backbone of the Wehrmacht" by Richard D. Law.  I promise you won't remember all of the info on the first read

Yes, bbotw is definately a good buy for general and historik info on the K98k.  However it is Not the 98k bible - way to many erros and omisions.
Buy the revised edition, it has about 30 additional pages on Mauser history & production, with No correction of errors that were in the original.

It's still up.  A lot slower though.

Non corrosive 8mm by Prvi can be found at AIM. I started shooting it ever since the prices on surplus went up.

I've found some good info in the Mauser forum at www.gunboards.com

ETA: oops someone else already mentioned it. Surplusrifle is a good how-to one too.
