How does this P38 compare to a war-time P38. The grips look different, I assume it is therefore post-war. Does it have the same markings as a war-time P38?

Is it the same as this P1, except with different markings? http://www.simpsonltd.com/product_info.php?products_id=3055&osCsid=cd22ef5300e2db2327564850f8d24747

I don't want one that costs $900. But, I don't want a "knock-off". How do the two pistols I have links to here compare to war-time P38s?

Post War P38's have Aluminium alloy frames though some very early ones had steel.
Markings aren't the same as WW2 guns, will have commercial Walther markings. Some other minor differences but insignificant.

P1's are military version, some differences from Commercial/Police  P38's are different barrel types, variations in slides, different sights and hex wear pin added on later P1 frames.

If you want a war time P38 AC/BYF/CYQ they can be found, if you want a P38 to shoot without hurting collecter value buy a postwar P38/P1.

Out of the relatively cheap post-war variants... which would you say is closest to the war-time P38? Which is the "best" as far as durability, fit and finish goes? Which is the best bang for the buck?

So... since the P1 is military, it should be durable/reliable/etc. right?

All post war P1/P38 will be comparable.  Later P1's had a hex bolt installed just above the trigger to cut down wear and tear on the frame.  None are "knock off's". they are all Walthers.

I have 3 P1's from Simpsons. They are all good shooters. For 195.00 they are an incredible 9mm bargain. Note-No +P ammo. Win White Box 115 gr is a popular among p38/p1 owners.

Many new p1 owners change the recoil springs with Wolff springs. I have not done this and haven't had any issues.
