Could someone possibly manufacture this in the US? I know
some German company is building them, and they look very
nice. Of course, they are non importable and they are very
expensive. I would imagine that it would be expensive to build
because everything has to be built from plans as there are no parts
kits due to extreme rarity of the rifle.

Also, does anyone have any direct experience with the rifle. Is it a
good solid rifle? Is it accurate and reliable?

The Germans found it expensive to manufacture.... so thy didn't make very many. That is why they are rare. They were set up to do it with a factory.

It is a very cool rifle. I have not heard of them having reliability or durability issues.

The problem with this, along with other German machine guns is they use a LOT of stampings. It isn't like you just have a machinist make one... in order to do it right, you have to find some way to stamp out these parts. Stamping is best for large-scale operations. Initial set-up is expensive... but the cost to make each unit is cheap. Machining is nice because it is universal... the system is easily modified. But, making each unit is more expensive.

You have an order of a size good for machining... but a rifle designed for stamping.

It will be expensive... I don't know exactly how expensive. If you do it, I would enjoy pictures.

Thanks for the link Wes!

As I feared, it seems like a very expensive endeavor!

I knew nothing of the FG-42 until I handled 4 beautifully made mags at a gunshow last month.

For the time, the FG42 was an advanced rifle. When everyone is using 5-shot bolt action rifles, an FG42 presents a serious advantage. However, like other German semi-automatic weapons manufactured and employed during WW2 they were generally overly complex and woefully under developed.

Even if your FG42 worked perfectly*and few did* it would be a kin to using a select fire FALO or similar. Its essentially a precursor to the MBR, meaning its too heavy and chambered for too much caliber.

As a civilian/novelty gun, the FG42 is as cool as they come. As an actual combat weapon, its very much evolutionary than revolutionary. There just wasn't a semi-auto MBR in WW2 that could touch the performance of the Garand. Believe me, I am not a Garand/M14 whore that believes they are infalible. Actually, I am critical of both weapons. That being said, for the time, the Garand was the best semi-auto rifle going. The SVT,G43 or Japenese Type 5*Japanese Garand clone* could come close...

Wasn't someone working on importing the semi auto copy made by a german company, maybe the same one making the gsg-5. I think it was about $2000 or so. They were selling them in Canada on Marstar's website

$2k will get you a non-firing replica FG-42. If you follow the link someone provided above, you'll see that a newly manufactured FG will run you about $11k all said and done.

It was, and remains, a very complex design that requires a lot of machining time.

I was always enamored with these weapons for their unique design but, practically speaking, it's a non-starter.

ok I was wrong, it is $2999 Canadian dollars

So about $2300 US, so tell me again how hard it is to build a FG42 for around $2000?

It seems that the design is very expensive to produce. It would be cool if someone could redesign the STG 44 to fire 7.62 X 39 mm; however, it probably would be just as expensive due to stampings.

umm...yeah...

FG 42 and an STG 44 are not the same thing.
