Is it ok to have a gap in between the two scope rings?  I have a marlin 30/30 that i replaced the scope on but the new scope I think is a little to big for the old rings so there is a gap, will this cause a problem or be ok?  I am new to rifles so thanks for any help you may be able to give!

Just make sure that the scope is the same size as the rings!  Are the scope and rings both 1" or is the scope 1" and rings 30mm.  Just my thoughts

they are different sizes, but i was wondering if i could still use the old rings and just have the gap there or do i have to replace them with the larger size rings

Replace the rings.  This will only lead to poooor accuracy.  AND dont tighten the rings down because it will damage the scope.  Just pay the 10-20 for new rings

Yep.

Make sure you have to right size rings for your scope.  If you don't, you might as well just use iron sights.

Are you refering to a gap between the sides of the rings where the screws go through? If so that is normal. Don't crank the screws down until the gap disappears, that will damamge the scope body.

thats exactly what i am talking about, i went and got new rings and that cap is much smaller.

Get a torque wrench and tighten them to the proper spec.  I also lap my rings before mounting the scope.
