Had a co-worker drop off a Chinese (?) SKS Paratrooper with me to swap the fixed 10 round magazine with a detachable 30 and to install a scope mount.  The scope mount is the typical version that replaces the receiver cover.  Didn't think there was going to be anything to it, until I ran across this weird addition to the receiver.  Never seen one like it before, and if you can't make it out from the pictures, it appears to be some sort of quick-detach mount that has been added.  It doesn't look drilled and tapped to me, because there are no screws that can be removed, almost like it was a factory-type job.  Can anyone identify this for me?

It's a factory scope rail. The scope mount that goes with it is rarer than frog fur.

It is a factory rail.  Navy Arms imported them back in the day.  I had one called the "farmers friend".  It was a standard length SKS with the side rail and a bipod rather than the bayonet.  The shorter version was called the "ranchers friend" and was bayonetless and bipodless.  I had the mount for mine and the green wooden box with the chicom red star pained on it.  Sold it for $375.00, would have been more but the mounts were an odd size and only took the scope it came with.  In the condition of yours it may be worth more to someone who has the mount.  The mounts were also serial numbered to the rifle.

As has been posted, its a factory scope mount. The reciever cover mounts are crap, if he has to have a scope on that rifle, I would recommend going with a something that mounts on the gastube, and go with a scout scope or dot sight. The reciever cover needs to be pulled sometimes to clean, and that will mess up your zero, if you were able to zero a scope mounted there to begin with.

The mount that attaches to the looks like a backwards soviet pu mount.
