In terms of lever guns, how does the actual measured muzzle energy and recoil of a .30-30 compare to that of a 12 guage shotgun? I can find figures for standard loads of the .30-30, but can only find the numbers for velocities of common 12 guage rounds, no muzzle energy numbers.

I've been eyeballing a Marlin 336ss ever since I saw "Pugsli" in the Lever Action picture thread, and am considering something similar. So I was curious about the rifle itself, and then I would need to find a decent 'smith in my local area that could do some chopping for me.

I owned 2 Marlin 336 CS's years ago and they were good guns. Quite accurate for lever guns. If you can handle a 12 gauge with field loads you can easily handle a .30-30. As for muzzle energy I can't answer that one, but I don't really see the comparison either. A 12 ga. slug is one hunk of lead compared to most all rifle slugs and each has it's own advantages.

E=bullet weight, times (velocity squared)divided by 450400

Puglsi's 16" barrel pushes a 150grn to 2100fps using a medium handload of varget powder, That makes for around 1400ft/lbs.  My 14" mossberg 590 will push a KO 1oz slug to 1450fps for around 1950ft/lbs. Most 30-30 loads are configured for 20" barrels and the average 20" 30-30 will do a 150@2300. 1400ft/lbs at the muzzle is more like a 62grn 5.56mm out of a 16"gun or a 123grn 7.62x39AK. About 150-200 more ft/lbs than a .30 carbine, .357 rifle or 5.45x39.
With handloads the numbers get fuzzy, you can handload a .357 levergun past whats safe for a revolver, and the .44mag can be handloaded past 30-30 performance.
Bottom line is 1400ft/lbs 150@2100 is plenty for sub 250yard engagements on sub 250lb critters. Falls nicely between the 5.56 carbine and full power rifle(.308, 30-06) in both power and recoil.

very awesome info there, thank you very much for your reply. if you can't tell, I am quite smitten with Pugsli, and am thinking about how to finance one for myself. ghost rings will come first, can't hack the H1 right off the bat along with the rifle and small upgrades. the large loop from Midway is also looking appealing for that Marlin.

No problem, The Urban levergun concept isnt meant to replace your 5.56 carbines or full power battle rifles, merely to augment a well rounded arsenal, and to prove the theory that dodads and addon do not replace training, tactics and mindset, That even a man armed with an 100 year old rifle design can own his environment.
