If it is for collecting then find a nice Russian or Albanian.
If it is for shooting than get a Chinese, Yugo or Romanian.

There really is not any country that produced many "Bad" SKS rifles. If you want a new one, the Yugoslavians are the easiest to find, but most have a grenade launcher that just adds weight and length. Also the Yugos do not have a chromelined bore so you would want to check it out if it is a used one.

A nice Chinese SKS is pretty easy to find, and they are not very expensive. Also China is the only one to make Paratrooper and AK mag model SKS's.

Of course the nicest SKS is probably the E-German, but they and Korean, Vietnamese, etc are worth quite a bit to collector and are very hard to find.

From a fit and finish standpoint, I think the Yugos are the best. The unissued Yugos are works of art. The blueing and machine work is generally gorgeous.

Functionally, I think they're all the same.

The SKS seems to be under rated. I have 3, a Russian, a Chinese, and a Yugo.  They all function great.  I had to do some work on the Yugo as I bought it in rough shape, and they are known for being prone to gas leaks if not well maintained.
I would not sell my Russian.  The Chinese is almost a carbon copy of the Russian, just a little less expensive, and the Yugo is a little heavier(some say beefier in that the front sight is bigger and the grenade launcher and GL sight add a little weight).  If I am looking to burn through some ammo, I take the Chinese or Yugo.  My Russian gets to go to the range about twice a year and is cleaned well afterwards.  They are all great.
