So I have a FAL (L1A1) on a century reciever.  I've never shot it.  Have only about 500 rounds of .308 for it and any .308's expensive.

Would it make sense to trade it for something like a dragunov svd type rifle that'll shoot 7.62x54r as it's cheaper, just as hard hitting and will carry the distance too.

I imagine that both are about the same accuracy wise?  Correct me if I'm wrong.

What do you think?

Sure. A fair trade would be the FAL and about $6,000.
I'm just messin' with ya.

The SVD and the NDM-86 are rare and obscenely expensive.

You could probably trade a decent FAL straight up for a decent PSL, which is basically a big AK that resembles an SVD and fills the same role, though they're not quite as accurate. Fires 7.62x54R.

That said, '54R isn't ten cents a round any more, either.

I assume a PSL and not a real SVD

As for the accuracy vs. a FAL, I would say that the PSL and most FALs are probably pretty close.

However, the FAL has more potential for accuracy. There's really not anything you can do to a PSL to make it more accurate out of the box. An RSA trigger group is about it.

With the FAL, you can go with a medium contour or bull barrel and free float handgaurd, and get a trigger job.

Avg good FAL and PSL both 2-3moa.

Keep the FAL and get a Mosin. Cheaper by far and easier to clean from corrosive surp.

Not really  looking for Match accuracy.  I'll take 2-4 MOA out of either and would be happy.  I'd just like something that I can afford to shoot.  54r is still in the $150/1,000 range.  I think .308 is nearly 3x that much, though I could reload it...

Then the PSL may be just the ticket. Chances are you'll always be able to trade back should you ever want to.

I'm not sure what the SVD is but it isn't a big AK like the PSL is

As an FAL and PSL owner, I'll have to say that I love both..........

The PSL is a decent shooter with Wolf 150gr "gold" (Prvi manuf.) and Czech silvertip......but really does not come close to the FAL in consistent accuracy. The PSL is different, and has a "cool" factor to it.....a very fun gun I've never regretted buying.

FAL has the PSL beat hands down for ergonomics, parts availability, and customization options however...

A century / L1A1 franken-fal would be a good trade for a PSL.....

Keep the FAL, and buy the PSL.....neither will ever be cheaper to buy than they are now

+1

Heck you can buy a box of Mosins, find the most accurate one and sell the rest.

Had both...sold both.

But I liked the FAl better (more modern), but the PSL was cheaper to shoot and way cool.

FAL has cheap, high cap mags, too.
