i think i've asked about this rifle before. tell me again why i shouldn't buy one![]() www.mauser.org/rifles/m63%20tanker/index.htm i'm thinking .308 if it will fire 7.62 nato. if these suck what should i get for a bolt gun in this calibre? i'm not looking for a "sniper rifle" just another battle rifle that will fire the same round as my stg58, and for $500 or less. is $495 the street price or can these be had for less? do you think these are factory .308 chambered or rigged 30.06's with a chamber insert? seems .308 would be a much shorter action than the other calbres. i really like the idea of a carbine but i did get burned on one of those god awful gibbs ishapore abominations when i first got into military rifles thanks for any info 2DARK2C |

I've alway eyed one... would make a great truck gun in my opinion. Sadly I don't like the price. It cost way to much to be used as a truck gun. Also getting it in 7.92x57mm for me is the way to go. But still.... little carbine bolt actions get my attention. I guess in a past life I was a cavalry trooper. If I can ever find a 8mm M63 for cheap I'll snap it up in a heart beat. |

if i got the .308 would i be good to go with my 7.62x51 stash- south a., port, & wwb? the price is high but it seems theres not many options for a .308 battle rifle (bolt) other than the ishapore. please keep the opinions coming. why do people bash MM? just a high price or are the monkeys like cia? thanks 2D2C |
well the rifles they say are german 98's are really just remarked yugo mausers knock offs sold for alot more than they are really worth |

They make false advertisements mostly with poor customer service. These are the stories you hear mostly. I have dealt with MM a couple times and I was treated very well. Had a problem with a firearm and they replaced it with a new one of better quality. Their prices are high but the quality of the guns are some of the very best I have seen. I have read of the horror stories but my findings in dealing with them are the direct opposite. I would reccomend buying from them if you want a good high quality firearm but not a historically accurate one. |
IIRC, the 7.62 NATO is acutally loaded to less pressure than the .308 winchester. |
Here some on gunbroker http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=100317428 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=100186241 link to pictures of my FR-8 i posted on another site. I got mine a few months ago for $125 http://mausercentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?search_id=673021710&t=21434 |

TheFr-* is a good way to go. If you dont like the price of the Mitchell's (and I think they are a bit high) go buy a Yugo and chop the barrel down, or have it done professionally, and modify the wood to fit. Shouldn't be too hard if you are fairly handy. Take a look here about the middle of the page to see what I did with a full length Ishapore Enfield. It's nothing fancy, but it will hit gallon milk jugs at 150 yards with a 2.5x BSA pistol scope or irons! Basically did this in about three or four days of spare time. Doug K Lover of short rifles |

for some reason my cp won't let me view gunbroker. i did find this one but it's in california and a bit steep www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?s=62e37f5d36ca927525ded7181030d809&t=100133 for that $ i'd rather have the tanker, i think. i've considered a savage or ruger or other modern .308, but i was really wanting a mauser in form and function. not a hunting rifle but a battle rifle. i may end up going in a different direction all together. thanks 2D2C |

I had an FR-8 and IMO, it was the worst Mauser I have ever owned. It did not have the same quality or well made feel to it that all the other Mauser's I've owned did. Could be I just got a bad one, but it would misfeed at least once every mag full, and the action was very rough, not the smooth Mauser action I am used to. The so-called "tanker" Mauser that MM is selling are really new guns built on Zastava actions and all new parts. They are good quality, that is one reason why the price seems high. You might be able to scrounge up an older Mauser carbine that is very similar for a decent price, but you will pretty much be limited to 8X57mm since that is the only caliber I've ever seen them in. I once owned one such carbine that had German Police markings on it. It sure would get your attention when fired with surplus Ss heavy ball ammo, hell of a muzzle blast too. IMO, it made a Mosin M38 seem like a pussy cat. |
