I've done this with my AK and have seen several people using the mag on their AR's as a shooting rest. My question, is this going to give problems with the rifle down the road? |

I don't think it will give problems to the rifle; but it may mess up the mag over time. In a lot of mag-fed weapons that do not have an extended magwell (M1 Carbine, M14, AK, etc.), the magazine is supposed to be able to move forward and back--just a little bit-- during firing. As a matter of fact, in the technical manual for the M1/M2 carbine, it states exactly that (that the mag release, when installed, should let the magazine move forward and back so that the rounds feed properly). By holding the mag in one position during the firing cycle, you may be more prone to misfeeds, or the bolt cycling back and forth may wear out the feed lips faster than normal. But that's about it--not really that big of a deal overall. Just something to be aware of. The only thing to watch out for is to not get in the habit of doing that if you use your AK (or any other rifle) out in the field (putting the mag down into the deck), because you'll get a bunch of dirt and garbage into the mag and make it more prone to failure. And, note what I wrote--maybe, possibly, etc. You may go a long time and have no issues at all. Or you may need to replace mags twice as often as, say, I do for my AK. Bottom line is, if you can shoot without doing it, I would; but if it's something you just find that you really need to do, then go ahead and do it. It shouldn't hurt the rifle, though. Hope it helps. |
