Is there any difference in the gun itself between the optics ready 556 and the one with the cheap irons?

Not that I know of. The one with the irons has the rear sight built into the rail though.

Same rifle just the sights are added. Only one that changed dramatically is the new DMR rifle with the 24 inch barrel.

The *optics ready* carbine is the way to go.. There are some great iron sights in the works so it's best to bypass the POS sights SIG in thier infinite wisdom decided to use and decide on your own what you'd like to use.
