| which of these mbr's is the kindest to your shoulder ? which is the worst? ptr-91 , m1a , ar10 , fal . i'm not very recoil sensitive but would rather have less if i can . |

It matters on the stock some of them have, but with the PTR91's being a G3 that run with a buffer to suck up recoil, you can change out to heavy MSG-90 2 stage buffers that make the recoil very light. Since it's a separate unit from the recoil spring in design it doesn't hamper or modify function in anyway but lessen recoil. Various HK stocks have or can take the thick padded buttpads that are very comfortable in the shoulder. MSG90 two stage stocks |
In their basic configurations (no special buffers/stocks/etc), kindest is the FAL with the gas setting on the bare minimum. Worst is the PTR. The AR10 has the least muzzle rise, the M1A the most. |
Sorry, I'd have to disagree there BB for standard configurations. The PTR91 has 10 flutes in the chamber compared to a G3's standard 12 which reduces the recoil on one alot. The G3's recoil is not the same as a PTR91 and my PTR91 just with it's standard G3 buffer had less recoil side by side with my M1A shooting the same ammo. With the heavier buffers besides, it should be the lightest in recoil around. I'm not arguing sides by sides with a standard FAL and a standard PTR91 when you can set the FAL at it's lightest gas settings, but we're not talking it needs to be just a standard. Putting in one of the MSG90 buffers is just an upgrade and it makes the PTR91 the better choice with one for someone to do looking for the lightest recoil possible, not to mention the very wide and comfortable recoil pads available. In New York there should be a muzzle brake on it too and that will tame alot muzzle rise. An M1A in a usgi wood stock with a standard metal flipup buttplate would have to be the worst I think.

My experience with these rifles (PTR, G3) is different than yours. I won't disagree with you though because perceived recoil is subjective; the M14 has more muzzle rise and maybe that is contributing to your perception. My SG/1 has the heavy buffer and 21E buttpad and it shoots maybe a little lighter than my M14, but my PTR with standard buffer was still sharper/harder than those, regardless of the number of flutes, and with the telestock I found it downright brutal. My AR10 was lighter than the M14 and PTR, and my STG58 with it's DSA brake, with gas dialed into it's sweet spot was lighter than all of them; but my para is about the same as the M14 & SG/1. I'd be willing to bet an AR10 with a heavier buffer, brake and PRS would be even lighter than the PTR with the heavy buffer in an MSG stock. It would be an interesting experiment; what could you use to measure recoil? |

Ranked in order. I've shot all of them in F/A(except FAL) and semi. I also own all of them. AR10 the best, especially great with a brake and or suppressor. Definitely the most controllable on F/A. FAL not as good as the 10 on a high gas setting, but can be tuned down to be comparable M1A/worst muzzle rise but not as "hard" as the HK G3/PTR- the worst in general but you can tame it with a pad and bolt gap. and YMMV |

The G3 is the worst recoil wise, most have bad ergonomics as well M1a would be next IMO but is the most reliable IMO if you have good mags that seat right. It is also the most accurate of the four Fal: My favorite of those listed recoil is plesant AR10 has the least recoil of the four, and can be as accurate as an M1a.
What do you mean by "bolt gap" I am unfamiliar with the term |
